What We Know So Far

The original Lady of the Grapes in Covent Garden carved out a distinctive niche: a wine bar and small plates spot that champions female winemakers. It’s a concept that sounds like it could be gimmicky but isn’t — the wine list is genuinely excellent, and the focus on women producers surfaces bottles you won’t find elsewhere in London. Now the team is expanding into a considerably larger space inside the Menier Chocolate Factory building, directly opposite Borough Market.

The new site is substantially bigger than the Covent Garden original. A 60-seat restaurant and 20-seat terrace will sit above a basement bar called Forbidden Fruit — a name that suggests late-night drinking with a certain theatrical flair, which would suit the Menier Chocolate Factory’s arty character perfectly. The proximity to Borough Market is a natural advantage, placing Lady of the Grapes in one of London’s most food-literate postcodes.

Borough already has a strong wine bar scene, but Lady of the Grapes’ particular angle — focused curation, female-producer ethos, and a lively atmosphere — should give it a distinct identity. We’ll return for a full review once they’ve settled into the new space.
