Introduction

Nutcracker is, in London, less a single show than an annual Christmas institution. English National Ballet has been performing The Nutcracker every December since 1950 — that is seventy-five consecutive Christmases of Tchaikovsky, sugar-plum fairies and the dance of the snowflakes. The company’s current production, choreographed by Artistic Director Aaron S. Watkin and Olivier Award-winner Arielle Smith, premiered in 2023 and has rapidly become the company’s most-popular Nutcracker version in decades.

The London Coliseum, ENB’s London home, is one of the most beautiful theatres in the country — Edwardian, Grade II*-listed, and the largest London theatre by capacity. The Christmas run brings the full English National Ballet Philharmonic into the orchestra pit and roughly 100 dancers (principals, soloists, corps de ballet, English National Ballet School students) onto the stage.

The Venue: London Coliseum

The London Coliseum opened in 1904 as Sir Oswald Stoll’s pleasure-palace music hall, designed by Frank Matcham. The 2,359-seat house is laid out across four levels — Stalls (758), Dress Circle (519), Upper Circle (538), Balcony (544). It is the home of English National Opera and the seasonal venue for English National Ballet.

Leicester Square (Northern, Piccadilly) is three minutes’ walk; Charing Cross (Bakerloo, Northern) is four; Embankment is six.

Best seats: Centre Stalls Rows G to L (connoisseur). Dress Circle Row B centre (best overall view of the snowflakes scene). Upper Circle Row A centre (bargain).

Accessibility: Step-free to Stalls and Dress Circle. Wheelchair spaces in the Stalls. Email [email protected] or call 020 7845 9300.

The Show

Nutcracker is one of the most familiar narrative ballets in the classical repertoire. Christmas Eve in late-19th-century Europe; young Clara is given a Nutcracker doll by her godfather Drosselmeyer; the doll comes to life, defeats the Mouse King, and Clara is whisked to the Land of Sweets where the Sugar Plum Fairy presides over a series of national-themed divertissements before the closing apotheosis.

Tchaikovsky’s score is one of the most recognisable in classical music — “Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy”, “Russian Trepak”, “Arabian Dance”, “Waltz of the Flowers”, “Snowflakes”, and the closing “Pas de Deux”. The English National Ballet Philharmonic performs live throughout. Approximately two hours including the interval — short by ballet standards, perfect for children.

The Cast & Production

Principal casting is announced a few months ahead. ENB’s current principals include Erina Takahashi, Aitor Arrieta, Sangeun Lee, Francesco Gabriele Frola, Emma Hawes, Junor Souza, Fernando Carratalá Coloma and Skyler Martin. Casting rotates across performances. Children’s roles taken by English National Ballet School students.

Music, Choreography & Design

The English National Ballet Philharmonic performs Tchaikovsky live. The Coliseum’s acoustic is unusually generous to the strings.

Watkin/Smith’s choreography keeps the traditional structure while adding more ensemble work for the corps de ballet. Dick Bird’s design — Edwardian Christmas-card pinks, golds and ice-blues — is widely considered the most photogenic Nutcracker design currently performed.

Tickets & Pricing

Tickets start at £27.25 and rise to approximately £150 for centre Stalls premium. Under-16s 25% off. Family bundles available.

Best value: Dress Circle Row B centre £75–£100. Splurge: Centre Stalls Rows G to L £100–£150. Bargain: Upper Circle Row A centre £45–£60.

What Audiences Actually Say

The 2024 and 2025 runs averaged 4.7 on TripAdvisor. Recurring positives: “magical for the children”, “the snowflakes scene”, “the live orchestra”, “Dick Bird’s costumes”. Mild negatives: “Act One slow for very young children”, “premium tickets pricey”.

Critic verdicts: four-star reviews from The Guardian (Lyndsey Winship), The Stage, Time Out, WhatsOnStage. Reddit r/ballet uniformly enthusiastic.

  1. The live orchestra. Meaningfully better than recorded versions.
  2. Dick Bird’s design. Most photogenic Nutcracker in London.
  3. The snowflakes scene. Visual highlight by audience consensus.
  4. The closing apotheosis. Standing-ovation moment.

  6. The London Coliseum. One of London’s most beautiful theatres.
  7. The £27.25 entry tier. Cheapest classical ballet of Christmas season.

  1. Act One slower for under-fives.
  2. Casting rotates — check sheets if you have preferences.
  3. Premium tickets up to £150.
  4. Coliseum is busy at Christmas — plan transport.
