What We Know So Far

Jackson Boxer has built one of the most consistent track records in London hospitality. Brunswick House, Dove, Henri — each one a restaurant that people genuinely love rather than merely admire. Vesper marks his first venture into north-east London, and the choice of Exmouth Market feels astute. The street has long been one of Clerkenwell’s most appealing strips, with a mix of independent restaurants, cafés, and a lunchtime street food market that draws the local office crowd.

The early menu details suggest confident bistro cooking with a gentle playfulness. Croquettes ‘arnold bennett’ with tarragon mayonnaise nods to the classic Savoy omelette in deep-fried form. Potato pizzettes with salame rosa sounds like the kind of dish you’d happily order twice. And pea and mint gnudi with brown butter is the sort of springtime plate that practically demands an outdoor terrace — which, conveniently, Vesper will have.

Location & Getting There

Exmouth Market runs between Rosebery Avenue and Farringdon Road in Clerkenwell. Farringdon station (Elizabeth line, Circle, Metropolitan, and Hammersmith & City lines) is about a five-minute walk south. Angel station (Northern line) is roughly eight minutes north. The 19, 38, and 341 bus routes all pass within a couple of minutes’ walk. Parking is limited and expensive — the Tube or a bicycle is your best bet.

Why We’re Interested

Boxer’s restaurants tend to attract loyal regulars rather than one-off visitors, which says something about the warmth of his operations. If Vesper follows the pattern of his other openings, expect genuinely hospitable service, a well-chosen wine list, and cooking that’s ambitious without being showy. Exmouth Market is, by general consensus, one of the most pleasant streets to eat on in central-ish London, and the addition of a Boxer restaurant should only strengthen that reputation.

We’ll publish a full review once Vesper has had a chance to find its feet. In the meantime, if you’re looking for restaurants in the area, our review of Dishoom King’s Cross covers another strong option a short walk away.
