What We Know So Far

Franklin’s was an East Dulwich institution for 26 years. When it closed, the neighbourhood felt the loss. That a group of locals — including Jamie Younger of the excellent Begging Bowl on nearby Bellenden Road — stepped in to save the site says something about how much this corner of Lordship Lane means to the community. They’ve reverted to the building’s original pub name, The Victory, and brought in Seán Breen from Noble Rot to run the kitchen.

Breen’s menu reads as French-ish gastropub, which feels exactly right for this site. Salsify fritters with aged Comté, truffle and steak tartare with dripping toast, and sautéed veal sweetbreads are the kind of dishes that reward regulars without alienating walk-ins looking for a good neighbourhood dinner. Noble Rot has a strong reputation for wine-friendly cooking, and if Breen brings that sensibility to The Victory, the wine list should be worth paying attention to.

Lordship Lane’s dining scene has been quietly strong for years, with the Begging Bowl, The Palmerston, and Franklins itself (in its day) all contributing to a genuine neighbourhood restaurant culture. The Victory slots into that tradition neatly. We’ll return for a full review once it’s had a few weeks to settle in.
