A Luxurious Sunday Roast in Marylebone
Weekends are synonymous with unwinding, and in the West End where stores stay open on Sundays, it’s an ideal day for leisurely shopping. However, amidst the bustling streets around Oxford Street, there’s a serene escape awaiting: a sumptuous Sunday Roast in a luxurious setting. Look no further than the Hyatt Regency London – The Churchill, a five-star hotel nestled in Marylebone on Portman Square, offering an oasis of elegance and culinary delights in the comfy and spacious Montagu Kitchen & Lounge.
The Montagu Kitchen occupies the expansive ground floor of this iconic Hyatt hotel in central London, paying homage to the legacy of former British Prime Minister Winston Churchill through its design elements and portraits of the man himself.
Large windows offer picturesque views of Portman Square, complemented by blue-panelled walls, rich dark wood flooring, and plush deep blue upholstered chairs beneath sparkling crystal chandeliers.
The open-plan kitchen serves as a captivating focal point, inviting guests to witness the chefs at work.
On Sundays, you can indulge in a sharing board of succulent slow-cooked roast joints from the Ethical Butcher – tender striploin, rich rib of beef, or succulent lamb shoulder rotating in pairs weekly. These are showcased at the restaurant’s live carving station.
Sunday lunches are just the best, aren’t they? It’s like giving yourself permission to kick back and enjoy some downtime. And when you throw in a glass of Prosecco, well, that’s just the cherry on top! And to add to the ambience a singer/ guitarist was playing great tunes.
We started the afternoon with a crisp and dry glass of Casa Canevel, Prosecco DOC, accompanied by some pleasingly good arancini stuffed with succulent mushrooms and oozing cheddar cheese.
And on the side, some plump green olives and superb freshly baked sourdough bread served with three dips – oil & balsamic, butter with French chilli and a luscious tomato paste.
Now onto the main event. My dining companion is a pescatarian, with a choice of salmon or sea bass, they went for the latter – a gorgeous fillet of flaky white fish with perfectly crisp skin. As for me, I love a traditional roast. This week, it was a choice between rib of beef and roast chicken, so naturally, I had to try both!
The chef graciously served up a portion of each, accompanied by beautifully crunchy duck fat roast potatoes, a fluffy Yorkshire pudding, the Montagu Kitchen’s signature homemade gravy and a medley of fresh green spring vegetables on the side… fabulous Sunday fare.
We paired our meal with a glass of Pa Road Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc ’23 – a full-bodied wine with good acidity, citrus notes, and a tropical finish, which matched well with both the fish and red and white meat.
A dessert trolley is an irresistible temptation. No matter how satisfying the main course was, there’s always room for that final sweet touch. My resolve crumbled when faced with the raspberry and frangipane tart, a fab fusion of flavours and a symphony of sweetness and a dollop of freshly whipped cream. Meanwhile, my friend chose a more refreshing path with a zesty lemon sorbet, showcasing restraint and a palate-cleansing choice.
Coffee was accompanied by an array of treats – dainty lemon cakes, fruity jellied sweets, and indulgent chocolate truffles, providing a delightful conclusion to a fantastic Sunday Lunch.
If you’re considering a weekend visit to the lively West End and seeking a break from the hustle and bustle, along with a taste of the cherished British tradition of a Sunday roast, the Montagu Kitchen might just be the place.
