Eiffel Tower—it’s time to move over! The Shard will soon light up London every night as the clocks spring forward, ushering in a new era of timekeeping with a sparkling hourly display.
Starting on Mother’s Day (Sunday, 30th March), the capital’s tallest building will pulse with light from sunset until 1am each nightmarking the hour and celebrating the start of British Summer Time.
You will soon be able to witness the top 20 storeys of this iconic structure being magically transformed by 575 energy-efficient LED units, each twinkling a dazzling display when a new hour begins.
Relighting hourly until 1am, the display will then transition to a low-power mode, ensuring the beloved beacon still shines throughout the night—the building is over 1,000 feet high after all.
Throughout the years, the lights have marked selected national events and holidays that reflect positive sentiment, as well as celebrate key moments in the country’s rich history. But now, the Shard is shifting to just celebrate the passing of time with this brand-new spectacle that you’ll soon be able to watch in all its glory.
The Shard aims to create a legacy for London through a truly unique display. With such an impressive towering height, the iconic building will become the UK’s tallest illuminated timekeeper, solidifying its place in the London skyline and becoming an enduring symbol of the city.
Designed by Renzo Piano and built in 2012, The Shard comprises a 26-floor office complex, six world-class bars and restaurants (such as aqua shard, Oblix, and Bar 31), a 19-floor five-star hotel, the UK’s tallest viewing platform, and more.
Now, there’s this brand new feature for everyone to enjoy, and since The Shard is visible for up to 40 miles away, we really do mean everyone! Watch the light show on the hour, every night from sunset to 1 am, beginning officially on Sunday, 30th March.
You can find The Shard at 32 London Bridge St, London SE1 9SG.
