The Islington launch at Angel Central in May is the latest incarnation for Soul Mama – a venue which blends live music with a menu inspired by global “mama” recipes.

The award-winning saxophonist – alongside co-founder and music manager Adetokunbo “T” Oyelola – launched a £1 million crowdfunding campaign after proving the concept at their debut site in Stratford.

The likes of Mica Paris, Katherine Jenkins, Omar, Rebecca Ferguson, the Syd Lawrence Orchestra and Yellowjackets play live sets at the east London venue.

“With Soul Mama, we are on a mission to spread love one venue at a time,” said Ms Brown, a double MOBO winner known for her CBeebies series YolanDa’s Band Jam and programmes on Jazz FM, and BBC Radio 2.

“We see Angel Central as the perfect home for our next chapter,” she added.

“Our very first Soul Mama location was originally meant to be in Islington, so in many ways this feels like a homecoming.

“Having received so much love for Soul Mama in Stratford, we cannot wait to bring that same energy to the heart of north London and continue growing our community.

“It will be a real joy to bring more music, culture and connection to such a vibrant and spirited destination. Islington is about to get even more soul.”

Soul Mama first opened in September 2024 on the ground floor of The Gantry Hotel, Stratford and has since welcomed more than 50,000 guests through its doors to sample a mix of African, Caribbean and South American cuisine and live performances spanning jazz, soul, gospel and reggae.

The Gantry is now set to close while a new Soul Mama will open at Westfield Stratford in August.

But before that the Islington venue will feature the brand’s purple and gold stage and host a mix of their favourite acts and emerging artists alongside family-friendly programming.

As well as live music, it will host comedy, spoken word events, Motown and Afrobeats brunches, and Soul Mama’s fireside chats.

The menu is inspired by mamas from around the world and their recipes with dishes including slow cooked Caribbean curries and one pots with rice and peas, and signature dishes like Soul Arepas and the Jerk Wings Pit.

Drinks, featuring cocktails such as the Coconut Mama as well as all the classics and a curated list of wine and beers.

Soul Mama Islington will open at 21 Parkfield Street, N1 in May.
