Pret A Manger is officially cracking down on its coffee subscribers who share their daily free drinks with friends. The chain, which has 269 stores in London, launched subscriptions in late 2020 before rebranding to ‘Club Pret’ last April.
Members are entitled to five drinks each day for £30 per month. At the moment, the Club Pret account uses a QR code that can be added to Apple Pay, Google Wallet and other similar mobile services. But this also means that people can take a screenshot of their code and send it to others.
A new move by the business means customers will now have to log in via its app every time they claim their offer. This comes as part of an effort to combat people sharing its subscription with friends.
The changes will take effect from Monday 18th March, as you will no longer be able to add the service to your Apple Pay or Google Wallet. A tweet earlier this month from Pret announced the changes were an “anti-fraud measure”.
There are currently 1.25 million people using the service every week. Subscribers to ‘Club Pret’, which costs £30 a month, are entitled to five free coffees or smoothies a day and a 20 per cent discount on food.
Subscriptions initially cost £20 per month, but were then raised to £25 and eventually £30 amid rising costs.
