Carpetright is close to going into administration with all of its 272 UK stores and 3,000 jobs on the line. London is home to 20 of the carpet and tiling retail giant’s stores, which are all at risk of being closed.

The company filed a notice to appoint administrators from PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) as it seeks to guarantee its long-term future. Carpetright was put on the market last week but on Friday last week (July 12) the company lodged a notice of intention to enter administration at the High Court, extending protection for the beleaguered retailer on the search for a last-minute buyer.

A cyber attack in April also made matters worse for the carpet giant as hackers targeted the company’s headquarters in Purfleet, Essex. The attack meant that the network was shut down and employee portals to Book time off and look at payslips were taken offline. Carpetright bosses assured the virus was contained before any data breach, however.

It has been a tough year for the retailer, as with many other companies like it. Let’s take a look at each of the Carpetright locations that are at risk of being closed in London.

Kevin Barrett, chief executive of Carpetright owner Nestware Holdings, told the Guardian that bosses are “focused on securing external investment to ensure as few customers and colleagues are impacted as possible”.

He added: “They are our main priority and we are taking all appropriate action to make sure they are informed and supported through this process. We have begun promising conversations with interested parties that are moving in the right direction, encouraging us that Carpetright has a viable future.”

It is rumoured that talks are underway with flooring rival company the Floor Room as well as B&Q owner Kingfisher, The Guardian said. Carpetright parent company Meditor, a hedge fund run by Talal Shakerchi has not made a profit since the takeover in 2019. The company went on sale earlier last week amid concerns over its cashflow The Guardian said.
