World Book Day is nearly upon us, and March 7 is promising to be a big one. I have so many favourite books I could never pick just one for a costume, so luckily I’ll be enjoying it from my sofa.

But for those who do have little munchkins to dress up, step one is often finding a book. Owning a Kindle can reverse that – you can pick a costume for your kid and download the book after.

With a Kindle Unlimited free trial, you could even do so for free. You get one month of downloading millions of books for free, so you could cancel your subscription after World Book Day if you so wished.

Kindle

My Kindle is incredible. Whenever I go on holiday, I’m no longer packing three to four thick paperbacks that take up valuable suitcase real estate.

Instead, I slip my Kindle into my Uniqlo bag and head off. It weighs no more than my phone and at the moment, it’s got Beth O’Leary’s entire collection on it plus some seriously good thrillers.

I was always sceptical of getting a Kindle because I love the feel of a physical book. I didn’t think anything could replicate the pages’ swishing, the smell of a book, or the weight in my hands.

I was wrong; the Kindle’s screen is rough enough to replicate the feel of paper, and its portability makes up for any lack of smell and weight. Besides, I can still pop to the library whenever I do miss ‘real’ books.

Amazon also frequently run sales where you can get Kindle books for £1, so I’m stocked up for the foreseeable. Dark mode means I can read in bed without disturbing my partner or being uncomfortable, and the adjustable lighting means I can read outdoors even in the sunniest weather.

My Kindle is my favourite bookshelf addition. It takes no space and makes reading a completely faff-free joy. And if you’re so inclined you can even decorate the little gadget – my Starry Night cover brings me great joy.

You can buy the Kindle from Amazon and John Lewis. You can get the Starry Night cover from Amazon.
