Before she was cast in the hit teen drama 13 reasons For Netflix, Jan Luis Castellanos had about $50 in his possession. Homeless Castellanos resorted to sleeping on Hollywood’s famous Sunset Boulevard.
The young actor reminded Mud Magazine that “feeling stuck” Driven by his personal struggles, it turned out to be exactly what Netflix wanted for Diego Torres’ character 13 reasons:

These conversations shaped the character and eventually seemed to take Diego in new directions, much to Castellanos’ delight. He noted that his own native language was even incorporated into his dialogue:
“He even let me speak a little Spanish, which is a huge part of my culture. It made me feel more at home with my character.”
Jan Luis landed his Runaways role without an agent
Castellanos has certainly run the gamut when it comes to high concept, young adult drama. For example, he played Topher in three episodes Fugitives During the second season of the Marvel series on Hulu.
Impressively, Castellanos did the part before he had a talent agent, as he explained to The Blunt Post:
“I didn’t have an agent when I got the role of ‘Topher’ in Marvel’s Runaways. It just goes to show that anything is possible.”

“Honestly, yes! It really hits me when I’m with people and it’s a conversational choice. Growing up I looked up to all these great Actors from Robert Downey Jr to Ryan Reynolds. It’s something I’m definitely proud of and a name that I have respectable.”
Jan Luis heard about ugly while filming Tall Girl 2
Speaking to CBR, 29-year-old Jan Luis Castellanos (born September 11, 1995) revealed that he first received Ugly while working on the 2022 rom-com Tall girl 2. But once he heard about the project, he became “Drawn into Character” From Croy:
“I remember being on the set of (the movie) ‘Tall Girl 2’ when I heard about this project. They were still working on the script and I was like you know what, let me get my hands on the Book just to be sure. I was drawn to the character and the opportunity came up. Honestly, the audition- I appeared in everything in the movie (Laughs.)”
Castellanos also interviewed Pop Culturalist about a possible sequel Ugly. When asked if he had heard any discussion about a follow-up, Castellanos admitted he was in the dark:
“Yeah, with me, myself and me. (laughs) I talked to Scott about it. Honestly, we won’t know until the first movie comes out. You just wish you could keep telling this story. At the end of the day, we Actors hope we can continue to do what we love, and that’s telling stories.”
However, he admitted that the idea of adapting another Ugly the novel for the second film was attractive “Lots of good things are in store for Croy:”
“I’m excited for the second book because there’s a lot of good stuff in store for Croy. It’s there. I’m excited to continue exploring this character, and I hope we get to do that. I hope people take it well. People will understand the message of the film, and as long as they do, I think we’ll be fine. We might go back for another one.”
However, according to director McG Ugly Producing a sequel depends on whether the film finds a strong audience.
