Dead Boy Detectives is officially on Netflix, starring George Rexstrew and Jayden Revri.
The play is based on the Vertigo comic by Neil Gaiman, who created the characters Sandman III With Matt Wagner and Malcolm Jones III. The detectives themselves are undead young boys Charles Rowland and Edwin Paine, the latter played by Rexstrew.
Interestingly, while the original cartoon characters Charles and Edwin were children who have not aged, Rexstrew is 5′ 11″ taller than one would normally associate with children.
Still, this is her first major screen release, apart from one 15-minute short film, and a major achievement for the breakout star.

George Rexstrew attended LAMDA
Rexstrew is an alumnus of the London Academy of Music & Dramatic Art, where he received an MFA in Acting.
During his school days, he played many roles in various shows and short films. He played Jack in a short film Still hereSebastian in production Twelfth NightAndrei entered Three sistersand three roles (Sigmund Freud, St Thomas, Soldier). The last days of Judas Iscariotand roles in various other projects.
He is skilled in stage combat, including props such as sabers and swords. In fact, he was the runner-up in the 2019 LAMDA Fight Night, the school’s stage fight themed event.
George speaks four languages fluently
Rexstrew is fluent in English, Italian, Spanish and French. He can also speak Catalan.
This is not only a useful skill for an actor, but an impressive skill for anyone regardless of profession.
He can also speak several dialects, including RP – the standard British pronunciation – General American, Belfast and General Northern.
This allows him to play a wide variety of roles, such as those listed earlier.
George’s Edinburgh Fringe Play earned rave reviews
Rexstrew played Jonny in a play titled Display 9which was released at the 2021 Edinburgh Film Festival.
Display 9 is based on a true story of gun violence that occurred at a movie theater screening The Black Knight Rises in 2012.
His performance received great reviews, including praise “vibrant life” he brought to the character. He and his co-stars were also praised for the sensitivity of their portrayals.
The show was so well received, in fact, that the production was staged at London’s Pleasance Theatre. Again, Rexstrew was praised for his own “realism and passion” in role, in “an honest account of survival:”
“George Rexstrew as Jonny gives an honest portrayal of survival and also handles Jonny’s point of view so realistically and passionately.”
George’s Dead Boy Detectives journey began during COVID
In a recent interview with Collider, Rexstrew revealed that a self-portrait in 2020 during the pandemic ultimately led to him landing the role of Edwin Paine.
He explained that the studios are operating during COVID-19 “initiatives to help that year’s graduates” because the usual range of shows and performances could not be held.
He sent a tape of himself to a mentoring program run by Warner Bros., hoping to capitalize on it “actors in training” program option:
“I graduated from drama school in 2020, which was the year of COVID, so our showcases and public performances were quite affected, as were all of that year’s drama school finalists around the world. Many casting directors at the studio took initiatives to help graduates from that year, and Warner Bros. set up an acting training program , where you can apply for mentoring.”
He heard nothing until 2021, when Warner Bros. emailed Rexstrew and asked him to audition. Dead Boy Detectives pilot.
Rexstrew said his first chemistry lesson for the role was on Zoom “a few days later,” and 10 days after that he “somehow secured the role:”
“I applied and sent a self-tape in May 2020, but I didn’t really hear back. And then in October 2021, I got a message on my personal email from Warner Bros. casting: ‘Hey, we have you in our archives and we’d like you to audition for the Dead Boy Detectives pilot.’ And I thought, “Great!” I shot a self-tape the next day, and then a few days later our chemistry was read on Zoom. Ten days after I got that email, I somehow got the part.”
George wants to share The Sandman’s Mason Alexander Park
As in the source comics for both series, Dead Boy Detectives and Sandman shows take place in the same universe.
As ScreenRant pointed out in a recent interview, Death from Sandman can be seen in the trailer Dead Boy Detectiveswhich further strengthens this connection.
Still, if there were to be any more crossovers, Rexstrew would love to see Edwin Paine interact with Mason Alexander Park’s Desire. Sandman series.
He told ScreenRant that Park “does such a good job” Playing Desire and that “Edwin would be so uncomfortable” if they ever met:
“I would love to interact with Desire. I think Mason (Alexander Park) does such a good job with that character, and I think Edwin would be so uncomfortable.”
