Data centers It is the backbone of artificial intelligence (AI) technologies, fueling everything from chatbot queries, to streaming videos, and files stored on cloud services.

Which European country has the largest number of AI data centers?
Announcement

These centers are large facilities that include servers, storage systems, and networking equipment used to store, process, and distribute data. As the number of data centers increases, the scope of AI applications expands, but they consume large amounts of energy and require large areas of land.

According to the 2026 AI Index report from the Stanford Institute for Human-Centered Artificial Intelligence, data centers are “the place where computing power is incubated.” The report confirms that “their capacities, geographical distribution, and supply chains that are based on them are what determine what artificial intelligence systems can be built and where they can be built.”

But which countries host the largest number of data centers in the world? How many are there in Europe? What does Europe’s position look like in the global map of the distribution of these centers?

The United States leads by a wide margin

Most of the world’s data center infrastructure is concentrated in a limited number of countries. According to the Cloudscene platform, on which the report is also based, the United States leads the list of countries by a wide margin with 5,427 data centers in 2025, more than ten times the number of centers in any other country, which reflects the extent of American leadership in this field.

Germany and the United Kingdom are ahead of China

Following the United States are two large European economies: Germany (529) and the United Kingdom (523). It is noteworthy that they are ahead of China, which hosts 449 data centers, despite its strength as a technological and innovative power.

This is followed by Canada (337), France (322), and Australia (314), which are countries where the number of data centers exceeds 300, while the Netherlands is close to this level with 298 centers.

As for the majority of the remaining countries, the number of facilities is less than 300 data centers each.

Russia (251) and Japan (222) complete the list of the top ten countries in terms of number of data centers, while Brazil and Mexico host between 150 and 200 each.

The European Union’s total is less than half that of the United States

Together, the EU countries host 2,269 data centers, equivalent to just 42 percent of the total data centers in the United States. When the United Kingdom is included, the percentage rises to about 51 percent of the level of the United States, in further confirmation of the strength of its position.

Data center distribution in Europe

Besides the strong positions of Germany, the UK, France and the Netherlands, only a few European countries host more than 100 data centres: Italy (168), Spain (144), Poland (144) and Switzerland (121).

Sweden (95), Belgium (81), Austria (68), Ukraine (58), Ireland (55) and Denmark (50) host between 50 and 100 data centers.

The map of Europe shows clear regional patterns. Western Europe dominates the scene, while Northern Europe appears smaller but strategically important, while Central and Eastern Europe appears more fragmented and less developed in this sector.

Also, a number of European Union countries have less than 35 data centers, while Türkiye leads among the countries nominated for membership in the Union, with 35 centers.

FLAP-D Markets

The data center sector in Europe is centered around a well-known group of cities: Frankfurt, London, Amsterdam, Paris and Dublin, known as the “FLAP-D” markets. According to Atlas Edge, these cities attract the largest share of investments, infrastructure and operator activity.

These sites dominate because they combine major points of Internet traffic exchange, strong demand from the financial and technology sectors, high quality connectivity, a strong presence of cloud service providers, as well as regulatory frameworks and a stable business environment.

Although the FLAP countries are ranked first in Europe, including EU countries, candidate countries, the European Free Trade Association (EFTA) and the United Kingdom, Ireland lags behind in the total number of data centers compared to these countries.

Capacity is the deciding factor

These numbers reflect the number of data centers only. The report notes that “although the United States shows clear progress, the ranking of the rest of the countries must be understood on the basis that the number of centers does not reflect differences in the size of facilities, their computing capacity, or the level of their exploitation.”

According to the “Advancing Cloud and Data Infrastructure Markets” report issued by “World Bank”, four factors determine investment decisions in data center and cloud infrastructure:

  • Reliable and affordable energy,
  • Flexible and resilient broadband connectivity,
  • Suitable geography and availability of land areas,
  • A stable political and commercial environment.

The report concludes that “low- and middle-income countries face difficulties in attracting investments in data center infrastructure due to weaknesses in power grids and broadband connectivity, as well as in the strength of their business environment.”
