amalfi, one of the most romantic places in Italy without a doubt, is a city and municipality in the province of Salerno, in the region of Campania, Italy, on the Gulf of Salerno. It lies at the bottom of a deep valley, at the foot of Monte Cerreto (1,315 meters, 4,314 feet), and is surrounded by magnificent cliffs and a coastal landscape. The city of Amalfi was the capital of the maritime republic known as the Duchy of Amalfi, a prominent commercial power in the Mediterranean between 839 and about 1200.
In the 1920s and 1930s Amalfi was a famous resort for the British upper class and nobility. Amalfi is the main town on the Costiera Amalfitana (Amalfi Coast), and it is now a major tourist destination, along with other towns on the same coast such as Positano, Ravello and others. Amalfi is on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
Considered one of Italy’s hidden treasures, as well as the ideal location for a honeymoon or a marriage proposal, the entire Amalfi Coast awaits you for sunny, gourmet, romantic and downright amazing vacations. The Amalfi Coast stretches for 50 kilometers and has rugged cliffs similar to those of Madeira in Portugal. The historic fishing villages of the Amalfi Coast are breathtakingly colorful and absolutely gorgeous, nesting like eagles in the cliffs on the cliff spurs. Visit there outside of high season; in spring, lemon trees perfume the sea air on the Amalfi Coast, and in September and October, the stunning vineyards carved out of the cliffs come alive. The Amalfi Coast is a fabled destination, a mythological holiday area that has turned the heads of famous heroes such as Ulysses, who was charmed by the sirens. Colorful settlements such as Amalfi, Ravello and Positano welcome you on the Amalfi Coast.
