ACS Athens – American Community Schools of Athens is a private school providing international JK-12 education to Greece’s local, national and international students. The school follows American educational philosophy, principles and values. Through excellence in teaching and diverse educational experiences, ACS Athens challenges all students to realize their unique potential: academically, intellectually, socially and ethically – to thrive as responsible global citizens.
Located in Halandri, at 129 Aghias Paraskevis Avenue, ACS Athens has a diverse student body of over 1000 students (as of 2019-2020) from over 65 countries. The school offers the American JK–12 curriculum, the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma, a non-IB track, and select Advanced Placement (AP) courses. The faculty, many with master’s or doctoral degrees, actively improve their teaching methods and receive the school’s accreditation for Sustaining Excellence from the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools.
With 1,088 students representing 65 nationalities, ACS Athens maintains a balanced diversity, with one-third of students from the United States, one-third from the local area, and the remaining third from various parts of the world. Small class sizes of around 20 students allow for individual attention. The school’s location in Athens provides a rich cultural environment with influences from Greek traditions.
ACS Athens incorporates the Greek language into its curriculum and offers a popular humanities course that combines philosophy, history, English and social studies, providing opportunities to visit historical sites across Greece. Students can participate in friendly competitions within one of the five Greek-themed houses: Athenians, Corinthians, Macedonians, Spartans, and Trojans.
The school collaborates with American universities, which facilitates the exchange of faculty, research and student interns. A notable campus program called “Youth to Youth” brings underage refugees from central Athens to the school on Saturdays, giving them the chance to experience the educational environment, learn English and Greek, and engage with the ACS Athens community.
