For years, one picturesque coastal town in the North has been something of a hidden gem – known for its cliff-top walks, sandy beaches, and a relaxed pace of life, but largely overlooked by visitors from the South due to the long and often awkward journey times. But that’s all about to change.
In December 2025, this walkable promenade town will join the list of UK destinations with a direct rail connection to London. Thanks to a major expansion of services by Grand Central Railway, residents and tourists will be able to step aboard a train in the town’s station and arrive at London King’s Cross without a single change.
New train station in Seaham, with direct links to London
Grand Central has secured approval from the Office of Rail and Road (ORR) to launch four daily direct trains each way, putting the County Durham town of Seaham on the intercity map for the first time ever. For locals, the direct link will mean quicker, easier travel to the capital for work or leisure. For visitors, it removes one of the biggest barriers to exploring this scenic stretch of the North East coast.
Why is this important? Until now, Seaham’s rail offerings have required time-consuming changes at major stations such as Newcastle or York. The new route will slash journey times for both locals and tourists. It will open up the North East coastline for day-trippers and holidaymakers from London. Also offering competitive fares and high service standards, as promised by Grand Central Railway. In addition to the new London link, Seaham will also gain direct trains to York and improved connections to nearby regional destinations.
Wider expansion on the East Coast Main Line
The launch is part of wider East Coast Main Line improvements taking effect in December 2025. Alongside Seaham’s new trains, operators including Lumo and Hull Trains will be adding services, collectively offering hundreds of thousands of extra seats per year.
A gateway to more seaside towns and sandy beaches
In just a few months, it will be easier than ever to swap the bustle of London for Seaham’s sandy beach or vice versa – without worrying about train changes. Whether for a last-minute seaside escape or a cultural city trip, the new link promises to redefine travel for both locals and visitors.
