A view of a cathedral in Rome from across a bright blue river

If you like your cities how I like my high heels (easy to walk in, of course); look no further. Because a historic hotspot within fairly easy reach of London has recently been named the most walkable city in the whole wide world.

Earlier this year, the on-foot aficionados at Guruwalk took it upon themselves to rank 100 cities from across the globe to find out which of them are the most step-tacular to stroll around. Now, of course – we were ever so speedy to let you know that London had made the cut. Our wander-ful capital city earned itself a pretty comfy spot on the list, being named the world’s seventh best city to discover on foot. But seeing as the lovely location that bagged itself the top spot is actually within pretty easy (and affordable) reach of London, we thought it only right to give it some airtime.

The most walkable city in the world

Using data from their website (that happens to offer some fab free walking tour guides, FYI), Guruwalk analysed the number of pageviews each city had gotten. They then cross-referenced those numbers with booking trends to reveal the most walkable cities in the world. And the magnificent metropolis that nabbed the crown is (drum roll, please)… Rome.

A dazzling destination for anybody interested in history, culture, or stuffing outrageously good food into their mouths; Rome took the top spot as the best city in the world to roam around on foot (see what I did there?). With an abundance of fascinating sights to seeand a plethora of pizza and pasta to be consumed; Rome was revealed to be a city that should be soaked up step by (Spanish) step.

Wander through the city, admiring the likes of the Colosseum, the Pantheon, and the Trevi Fountainand then reward yourself for your ridiculously high step count with as much pizza, pasta, and gelato as your heart desires. Sounds pretty heavenly to me. Flight prices from London to Rome are (of course) dependent on the time of year that you wish to visit. But with a thorough rummage through Skyscanner, you can usually snap up flights for less that £50. Not bad, hey?

The world’s best destinations to discover on foot:

  1. Rome, Italy
  2. Budapest, Hungary
  3. Madrid, Spain
  4. Prague, Czech Republic
  5. Barcelona, Spain
  6. Lisbon, Portugal
  7. London, United Kingdom
  8. Florence, Italy
  9. Amsterdam, Netherlands
  10. Berlin, Germany

You can take a look at GuruWalk’s full list of the world’s most walkable cities here.
