Brockwell Lido in the sunshine

As temperatures soar and London bakes under this summer’s heatwave, Londoners are flocking pretty much anywhere and everywhere outdoors in search of the ultimate way to cool down. With many miles between the city and a beach, nothing beats the timeless charm of a lido. And agreeably, these iconic pools, dotted across the capital, have become a staple of British summertime.

And this year is it’s finally time to give South London its dues – as one lido has just been crowned the very best in Britain. That’s right people – in the whole country!

Britain’s best lido right here in South London

According to a recent study by the AAwhich evaluated pools nationwide based on popularity, reviews, value, and more, the beloved Brockwell Lido has claimed the top spot.

And rightfully so with its blend of historic architecture, lively social scene, and inviting waters. Whether you’re a seasoned lane swimmer or just looking for a sunny spot to unwind, Brockwell Lido is setting the standard for outdoor swimming in the UK.

The lido scored an impressive 82.9 out of 100, topping a list that considered factors such as Google search data, review scores, Instagram popularity, entry fees, and summer weather conditions.

Brockwell Lido: The country’s best outdoor pool

Brockwell Lido is a beloved local landmark, housed in a Grade II-listed art deco building dating back to the 1930s. It features a bright blue, 50-meter-long outdoor pool, perfect for swimming laps or simply cooling off. Visitors also enjoy the spacious sunbathing areas and a charming café on-site, making it a great spot to relax after a swim. The lido even offers a sauna, adding to its appeal as a year-round destination for water lovers.

Close behind Brockwell in the AA’s rankings is Tooting Bec Lidoalso in South Londonwhich scored 76.4. This lido is the UK’s longest freshwater outdoor pool at 91 meters and is famous for its colourful changing huts. Like Brockwell, it requires advance booking due to its popularity.

London Fields Lido in East London secured the fourth spot nationally and third in the capital with a score of 71.3. It is notable for being one of the few heated outdoor pools in Londonoffering a comfortable swim even in cooler months. It also features a sun terrace and café, making it a popular year-round destination.

Other London lidos rounding out the top 10 include Hampstead Heath ponds and Hampton Poolunderscoring the capital’s wealth of excellent outdoor swimming options.

With so many outstanding lidos to choose from, Londoners can escape the heat with a refreshing dip in a beautiful outdoor pool. Whether you’re looking for a historic setting, a long swim, or a family-friendly venue, London’s lidos offer something for everyone. Just be sure to book ahead to secure your spot and beat the queues.
