If you’re looking to spend a day out in London and want a neighbourhood that has it all- there are tons of fun things to do in London near Covent Garden.

This guide will help you explore both iconic favourites and hidden gems. From fine dining restaurants and luxurious shopping, to exhibitions and performances, it’s one of the liveliest places to see in London.

If you’re familiar with ‘Sunny in London’, you know it’s an area of London I write about and visit often. And since it was the first place I lived in London, it’s naturally it’s one of my favourites.

Here’s a video on some of the places to visit in the area, featuring Summer Things to Do in Covent Garden.

Hidden Gems of Covent Garden

You’ll find most of Covent Garden’s hidden treasures away from the bustling piazza. One of the most photographed is Neal’s Yard. It’s ‘Insta-famous’ for its colourful facades and tranquil vibes. This is a favourite escape for locals. Nestled in a small courtyard, it’s home to boutique shops, vegan cafes and wellness hubs. Enjoy a coffee at 26 Grains or stop by Neal’s Yard Remedies for natural skincare.

For gorgeous views of London’s skyline, head up the escalator at the Royal Opera House to the rooftop bar, where you can enjoy a relaxing drink while overlooking the city. It’s the perfect spot for a quiet retreat or pre-theatre cocktail.

Hidden nearby, The Yards complex offers a mix of chic cafes, independent boutiques and art galleries that are well worth exploring. You’ll also find tons of places to eat in this area too.

Arts & Entertainment

Culture enthusiasts will love Covent Garden’s arts scene. As home to the Royal Opera House, this neighbourhood is one of London’s premier destinations for world-class ballet and opera performances.

For more live entertainment, Covent Garden’s theatres offer some of London’s biggest shows. Check out The Lion King, Devil Wears Prada, Matilda, Hercules, Agatha Christie’s The Mousetrap- all just a short walk away.

Covent Garden is also famous for its street performers, who have to audition for a coveted spot here. These acts bring incredible energy to the piazza, with everything from magicians to musicians entertaining throughout the day. If you’re looking for free things to do in London near Covent Garden, watching them perform throughout the day could be enjoyable.

Food and Dining

Covent Garden is a culinary hotspot, which makes sense given its many theatres and shows in the area.

For fine dining, Clos Maggiore is famous for its romantic atmosphere and floral décor, while Adam Handling’s Frog serves innovative British cuisine.

If you’re in the mood for something more casual, head to Henrietta Street, where you’ll find a huge variety of places to eat. And, if you want regular suggestions of things to do in London and places to eat, get the Sunny News. That’s my weekly email which features London updates and Mr. Sunny’s Pub of the Week.

A place you’ll find me often is Viola’s Cafe. It’s one of the few places that has food that is just as beautiful to eat as it is to photograph.

Sports & Leisure Things to Do in London near Covent Garden

There’s plenty to do for those seeking leisure activities. During Wimbledon, watch live matches on screens around the piazza, where you can soak up the excitement with fellow tennis fans.

If fitness is part of  your London itinerary, Covent Garden is the home of the UK Peloton studio. You must book ahead for one of these high-energy classes.

For ultimate relaxation, visit Aire Spa. It’s an elegant underground spa inspired by ancient Roman baths. This luxurious spot is the perfect break from London’s busy streets, with indulgent treatments to refresh and recharge. I think a lot of the Peloton instructors go here too.

Seasonal and Christmas Things to Do in London near Covent Garden

Covent Garden comes alive during the holiday season with festive lights, a Christmas market and events.

The annual Christmas light switch-on brings a magical glow to the area, illuminating the piazza and its iconic giant tree. The Christmas Sandwich Festival is a must-visit for foodies during the holiday season.

Things to do in London near Covent Garden- Museums

Families will love the London Transport Museum, located right in Covent Garden. It offers interactive exhibits perfect for kids. With history, design and hands-on fun it’s popular during school holidays. However, as an adult who visited by myself, I was surprised at how interesting all of the displays were to me.

Also, a short walk away you will find the British Museum. It’s one of the most popular places to visit in London. The top thing to see is the Rosetta Stone. So if you’re going, arrive early and find that first.

Shopping

And those that don’t have a limited budget, you’ll find quite a few luxurious things to do in London near Covent Garden.

Covent Garden’s shopping options range from high-end boutiques like Chanel to speciality stores, offering everything from luxury skincare at Elemis, Molton Brown and Kiehl’s to unique finds in the market’s artisan stalls.

Head to King Street for upscale brands and browse Long Acre’s speciality shops for more independent shops. And, if you’re passionate about travel, don’t miss Stanfords.  It is without a doubt the best place to shop for London travel souvenirs.

With a mix of international brands and local makers, Covent Garden is a true shopping destination. You just need to give yourself plenty of time to get lost in its side streets. I explain my shopping strategy for the area in this video below.

Things to Do in London Near Covent Garden – Unique Pubs

Covent Garden is known for its historic pubs, each with its own character and story.

Lamb & Flag, one of London’s oldest pubs, was once a favourite of Charles Dickens. For a unique experience, visit Nell Gwynne, if you can find it!

Another hidden gem is The Ship & Shovell, a pub split into two parts on opposite sides of the street, giving it a truly distinctive charm.

Nearby, Gordon’s Wine Bar is an absolute must for wine lovers. As one of London’s oldest wine bars, its atmospheric candlelit cave and impressive wine selection make it a favourite among locals and tourists. Local tip: go on a weekday during the day for your best chance of not waiting in a long queue.
