The seed for this leafy sanctuary was planted in late 2021 by Jens Jakobsen – affectionately dubbed the ‘chief onion’ – who envisioned turning a derelict corner into a thriving community hub.

Today, The Onion Garden bursts with life: over 200 species of plants weave through the space, where whimsical mosaic walls and striking sculptures add texture and colour to its verdant tapestry.
While the Onion Garden is part of a larger ecosystem – London has around 3,000 green spaces, but its secret and community-run gardens offer some of the most intimate and unique experiences for those willing to explore beyond the famous parks.
True to its name, onions grace every nook – some sprouting proudly in cultivated soil, others suspended like living art from branches overhead, while many inspire creative installations. It’s this playful homage to the humble vegetable that gives the garden its quirky charm.

The Onion Garden is a not-for-profit, run by and for the Westminster community. It’s open on weekdays from 7:30am-5:30pm (until 10pm on Thursdays), and on weekends 8:30am-4:30pm.
