Open-air theatre is a liberating way of experiencing the classic plays we all love. And while the West End is sensational as it is, summer brings with it a chance to enjoy its offerings outdoors.
Every year, the roofs come off some huge theatre venues in London. Not literally, but some major shows do move outside for limited sunny runs.
Shakespeare’s Globe opens its outdoor stage and West End Live returns. Here at MyLondon, we’ve gathered all the info on London’s open air theatre shows for 2024.

Shakespeare’s Globe
There’s no open air theatre more famous than The Globe. The modern replica of Shakespeare’s original building is as realistic as possible, and includes the old outdoor theatre with its standing yard and tiered wooden stands.
This summer, The Globe is staging a fast-paced version of Romeo And Juliet created for young people. Set in 2024, it tells the story of the Montagues and Capulets in a new way. You can book tickets here.
The Globe is also staging Much Ado About Nothing in a collaboration between Shakespeare’s Globe and the Mason Gross School of the Arts at Rutgers University, New Jersey. You can buy tickets here.
West End Live
West End Live is your opportunity to see the West End’s best shows for free. For one weekend, the casts of top shows perform in Trafalgar Square for all to see.
While this year’s line-up and dates haven’t been announced yet, last year included shows like The Lion King, Hamilton, and Les Miserables. The casts usually perform a small number of their best songs. You can keep up to date here.
