An Enfield micropub is celebrating after being named one of the best in the UK. The Little Green Dragon has been named as one of four finalists in the Campaign for Real Ale’s (CAMRA) prestigious Pub of the Year 2024 competition.
The Winchmore Hill site was nominated for its fun atmosphere, high-quality menu of ciders, perries and cask ales and ongoing commitment to supporting independent breweries. Since opening in a former retail unit in 2017, the small beer house has prided itself on being an old-fashioned place for North Londoners to hang out with a drink made right here in the city.
There’s plenty of room to sit back and chat thanks to its comfortable couches and converted bus seats, while the lack of music means you can actually hear your drinking buddies. There are also no TVs or slot machines, instead players enjoy traditional games such as skittles and shove ha’penny.
Owner Richard Reeve said: “I was delighted (and also a bit shocked) to hear that our little micro pub had been rated by CAMRA as one of the top four pubs in the UK! Clearly, at this stage of the competition, it’s about approx. much more than beer quality, so I really have to thank my incredible family and staff and amazing regulars for making visitors feel so welcome in the Little Green Dragon.”
He will now battle the other super regional winners in Preston, Bridlington and Oswestry before the overall champion is announced in January 2025. However, the former IT consultant is no stranger to success.
The Little Green Dragon, named after the long-defunct Green Dragon Public House further up the road, was awarded the title of CAMRA’s Greater London Pub of the Year 2018 – just a year after opening. It was too Enfield and Barnet’s best pub from 2018-2022, before narrowly missing out on North Finchley’s The Bohemia last year.
