The incredible Clogau story
Centuries of mining at the Clogau St David’s site in Snowdonia, North Wales, had yielded only copper until the unexpected discovery of rose-hued gold ore in 1854. Over the following decades, more than 2.5 tonnes of gold was extracted.
Upon the first closure of the Clogau St David’s mining operation in 1911, a stockpile of gold was gifted to the British Royal Family, and the regalia used in the investiture of Edward as Prince of Wales was crafted using this Clogau gold.
Since 1923, many members of the Royal Family have used Welsh gold to craft their wedding bands, including Queen Elizabeth II, Princess Diana and Princess Catherine.
In 1989, North Wales businessman Bill Roberts chanced upon the abandoned Clogau St David’s mine and in 1992, the first jewellery appeared from Bill’s newly formed brand Clogau Gold of Wales Limited.
Just like modern-day Clogau jewellery, every piece contained rare Welsh gold from the Clogau mine.
