Energy-savvy shoppers are snapping up an Amazon fan that’s cheaper than it was in the summer – and using it to dry their clothes. The Honeywell TurboForce Power Fan has 17,220 five star reviews and currently costs £22.50, down from £32.49.
This is even cheaper than when it was on sale in the summer, where it was discounted to £24.45, according to internet archive the Wayback Machine. It’s also available from Argos (£24) and eBay (£19.99, while stocks last). However, if you fork out a bit more money, you can get the fan with heat settings too at Robert Dyas for £47.99, down from £54.99. The fan comes with three settings and a 90 degree oscillating head, which means it can cover the whole room.
It can also mount on a table or a wall, with the effects being felt seven metres away. At just 40 watts, it only costs 1p per hour to run, according to energy calculator sust-it. For reference, the famous Dry:Soon heated airer (£159.99) is 300 watts, meaning it costs 9p per hour to run. This is why some shoppers have been using it to help dry clothes in cold winter months before they start smelling musty.

One shopper warned not to let water drip onto it for safety reasons, saying: “If, like me, you have a stroke looking at your electricity bill, then this may help. Drying clothes inside during colder times is tough; it takes forever and can leave them smelling a bit damp if they don’t dry quickly enough. Drying them in a warm room is ideal, but expensive with today’s electricity prices. I bought this fan as a kind of experiment, a way to speed up the drying process while using significantly less electricity.
“So, does it work? In a word, yes. It can’t perform miracles, but it does speed up the drying process a fair bit. It also seems to help prevent the damp smell, which is an added bonus. I bought this particular model because it tilts 90⁰ allowing it to be placed directly under a clothes horse, firing air upwards through the washing.” They did add: “My only wish is that it was more powerful. 40 Watts is fine, but 100 Watts would be better, drying the clothes quicker at a little over double the cost per hour to run.”
The fan itself has a very strong 4.5 out of 24,600 reviews on Amazon, which works out to 17,220 five star and 4,674 four star reviews. It also has a 4.6 out of 164 reviews on Argos. One happy shopper said: “I recently purchased the Honeywell TurboForce Power Fan (HT900E), and I must say that it has exceeded my expectations in every way. This sleek and compact fan has become an integral part of my living space, offering a refreshing breeze that keeps me cool and relaxed throughout the day!”

A less pleased shopper wrote: “This is a powerful fan but it’s a bit on the loud side. It’s not loud enough to be a deal breaker for such a powerful fan, though. However, the power button is poorly placed at the back of the fan so not easy to access and, and this is why I would definitely not recommend buying it, the button is really difficult to operate. It’s shape is hard to manipulate and it’s really stiff to turn. In the end, I always had to turn the fan around to find the lever and get a good purchase on it to turn it. Not a good design – in fact, I’d call it a design fault.”
However, if you want to just commit to a more expensive to run space heated, Currys have a discount on one of their highest rated ones. The ESSENTIALS Fan Heater is currently £14.99, down from £22.99. At 2000 watts, it costs 58p an hour to run. It sits at a 4.3 out of 406 reviews on Currys.
