This Saturday, July 26art lovers and Londoners alike are in for an unforgettable midsummer night as Trafalgar Square will transform into an open-air stage for ‘The Triumph of Art’ – a free, one-night-only spectacle in celebration of the National Gallery’s 200th anniversary.
Created by a team that includes award-winning playwright Inua Ellams and BAFTA-winning directors Tal Rosner and Nina Dunnthe event promises to fuse cutting-edge technology with centuries of art history. So you can expect stunning projections inspired by masterpieces from the National Gallery’s world-renowned collection, brought to vivid life right before your eyes.
A free art show in the heart of London this weekend
At the beating heart of the show is a specially commissioned anthem, ‘The Triumph of Art’written by composer Michael Betteridge, which will be performed live by a 120-strong community choir. Their voices raised from the very steps of the gallery will echo across the square, uniting the crowd in a jubilant moment of shared celebration.
What sets The Triumph of Art apart isn’t just its dazzling visuals or star creative team. The performance will weave together stories inspired by real Londoners and their connections to art, paralleling the gallery’s mission to be, in its founder’s words, “the people’s gallery.”
Poets James Massiah, Rachel Long, and Cecilia Knapp – some of Britain’s most vital contemporary voices have shaped original verses for the occasion, all reflecting on the role of art in contemporary urban life.
