Savouring Tradition at Mr. Fogg’s City Tavern
Nestled amidst the bustling streets near Liverpool Street, a beacon of Victorian charm and whimsy beckons passers-by to embark on a journey through time. Mr Fogg’s City Tavern, situated in Broadgate Circle, emerges as the latest addition to the vibrant tapestry of Mr Fogg’s popular London restaurant chain.
This brand-new bar and restaurant invites you to step into an enchanting world inspired by the spirit of Phileas Fogg and his intrepid Victorian companions. As if plucked from the pages of a Dickensian novel, the tavern stands as a testament to the bygone era of traditional public houses, offering a sanctuary for weary souls seeking respite after a day’s toil in The City. However, Mr Fogg’s City Tavern isn’t exclusively for city workers; it welcomes those of us who relish exploring London on the weekends, undoubtedly a quieter time for city exploration.
We ventured to Mr Fogg’s City Tavern on a Sunday afternoon for leisurely lunch. With the weather still cold and dreary, we opted for a seat inside in a comfortable corner, where an 80s soundtrack softly played over the stereo. But with the better weather finally on its way, you may well fancy sitting out on their expansive terrace if you visit them.
The décor of Mr Fogg’s City Tavern is nothing short of theatrical, immersing you in a world of eclectic Victorian splendour and charm. Dark wood floors contrast with chalky terracotta painted walls, adorned with Victorian memorabilia and portraits, such as that of Lady Viola Fogg, adding a touch of aristocratic allure. Marble-topped tables are set with fringed lampshades and the ceilings are hung with chandeliers. Guests can choose to sit on high stools at sociable tables or in cosy corners furnished with low cushy sofas and bucket chairs upholstered in William Morris prints.
Cocktail lovers rejoice at Mr Fogg’s, where libations take centre stage. Dive into their extensive drink’s menu boasting punches perfectly portioned for one, two, or four. Explore a world of themed signature cocktails alongside timeless classics. And for those with discerning tastes, indulge in their curated selection of wines, champagne, and beer.
We started with a potent and stimulating mix called Greedy Groggler with a Tavern Grog, blending Eminente Reserva 7yr rum, Bacardi Carta Negra rum, Belle de Brillet pear & cognac liqueur, and Lucano Anniversario amaro with mandarin purée, fresh lime juice, and Angostura bitters. The Gilded Portfolio was just as boozy, with an aromatic mix of Hennessy V.S. cognac, Martini Riserva Speciale Rubino vermouth, Cointreau Noir orange liqueur, Guinness reduction syrup, and a mist of Ardbeg 10yr Scotch whisky.
We kicked things off with a serving of hummus accompanied by freshly baked flatbread, before settling down to a hearty roast dinner. The Sunday lunch options included lamb, half-roast chicken, sea bass fillet, or Jamaican jerk chicken. My companion and I both opted for the leg of lamb, which was rolled and generously stuffed with spinach and garlic.
It was served with crisp roasted goose fat potatoes, tender baby carrots, tenderstem broccoli, and warmly spiced braised cabbage. Additionally, a homemade Yorkshire pudding (my favourite) crowned with a rich, flavourful gravy complemented the dish perfectly. Paired with a glass of Picpoul de Pinet, Baron de Badassière, Languedoc, France. Crisp and dry, it offers notes of citrus and a good minerality.
For dessert, we indulged in an apple crumble, infused with cinnamon and topped with a wonderfully crunchy crumb and a jug of creamy custard. Alongside, a homemade, soft, and gooey chocolate and cookie dough brownie, served with a scoop of velvety vanilla ice cream… the ideal finale to our traditional Sunday dinner.
Mr Fogg’s City Tavern offers more than just a meal; it’s an immersive Victorian experience right in the heart of the city. Whether you’re a city dweller looking to soak up the urban atmosphere or just passing through, stop by for a relaxed brunch or Sunday Roast.
Mr Fogg’s City Tavern will host the Live Music Brunch featuring Midnight Rye Society every Saturday. Guests are treated to a savoury main course and a sweet dessert course with 90 minutes of free-flowing prosecco or punch for £48.
