One of the most beautiful things about watching a film is the chance to escape into the world depicted by its creator, burrowing deep into a new city or a land unexplored. Some places in the world crop up in movies more than others, however, and many get mentioned in films without even being shown on screen.
A new study has found that London is only behind Paris when it comes to the most-quoted cities in the world in Hollywood historywith the two European capitals being talked about the most on-screen according to the data. Travel Insurance site InsureandGo has crunched the numbers using QuoDB’s film database to see which cities get spoken on the most, dating all the way from 1892 until the present day.
The most quoted cities in movies
It’s not hard to see how Paris has come out on top, with the city of love getting mentioned by many a movie couple, perhaps most famously with Humphrey Bogart delivering the ‘We’ll always have Paris’ line in Casablanca (1942). The city has gathered up a mean 33,078 mentions on, which made every other place in the world bow down to its dominance.
London came hot on its heels, with our capital getting mentions on the screen since 1897, dating back to a remark in Death of Nancy Sykesand cruising through 30,624 mentions from James Bond to Paddington.
Rome took the bronze medal, with over 16,000 mentions in films including the likes of The Great Gatsby (2013) and The Talented Mr Ripley (1999). After this, the list is dominated by US cities, with Chicago, Boston, Los Angeles, and Miami all featuring in the top 10, and (surprisingly) New York City settling for 14th on the list.
