If you’re not in the know, Japanese curry bread is a deep-fried pastry coated in crispy panko breadcrumbs and stuffed with a mild curry.

And like the fluffy crustless sando this Japanese street food is having a moment among hungry Londoners.

Kanazawa is a Japanese-owned brand that was born in London in 2022 as the UK’s first bakery specialising in handmade kare pan – or curry bread.

It started selling its wares online and from a van at the weekend Lower Stable Street Market in Coal Drops Yard, King’s Cross.

But the Islington Green store is its first bricks and mortar venture.

The pastries are made from a tailored dough that stays crispy on the outside and moist on the inside. The filling of minced beef, veg and Japanese spices is cooked to a thick stew and the breads can be topped with sausage or cheese.

Kanazawa also serve Japanese milk bread and nama doughnuts – a pillowy brioche-style melt in your mouth treat filled with the likes of custard and cream.

Posting on Instagram it wrote: “We are truly delighted to announce the official grand opening of our first physical shop🏡🎉

“With our grand opening, we are also pleased to share two special updates — our beloved Nama doughnuts are returning, and our Yudane Shokupan (Japanese milk bread) – limited stock a day, will now be available in store 🍞

“Thank you for being part of this journey with us. Your continued support means more than we can say! We look forward to continuing this journey with you.” 💛

Fans of the brand shared congratulations on the opening with one posting: “It’s so inspiring to see you grow and now have a permanent shop!”

While another added: “It’s great to see how you’ve gradually grown your business. Congratulations on this step, and best of luck.”

The bakery van will be returning to Coal Drops Yard’s Sunday market in April.

Kanazawa is open Tuesday to Sunday 10am to 4pm at Unit 3, 34 Islington Green, London, Islington.
