If you’re sick and tired of the winter blues and are desperately seeking signs of spring, Kew Gardens have got you covered with the return of their adored Orchid Festivalset to transform this beloved botanical garden into a tropical paradise for the remainder of the season.
Boasting one of the biggest botanical collections in the world, this annual celebration of the vibrant flora will be running from February 3 – March 3 2023with this year’s iteration inspired by the natural beauty and biodiversity of Madagascar.
As in previous years, the Orchid Festival takes inspiration from countries where the flower naturally blooms and thrives. Previous displays paid homage to countries including Brazil, India, Thailand, Costa Rica, as well as last year’s dedication to Cameroon.
With Madagascar finally getting the Kew Gardens treatment, you can expect a plethora of fabulous things to do that pay homage to the island’s wildlife, agriculture, culture, and beyond.
As for the world-famous displays, prepare to be blown away by the intricate giraffe weevils, or the ring-tailed lemurs dangling in the trees above you, all masterfully arranged with vibrant orchids and plants of every colour, shape, and size.
Plus, you get access to a fantastic photography exhibition that’ll be on display throughout the festival, with photographs by Tina Waibel. The Malagasy photographer is known for her rural photographycapturing the lives of people she meets across the country and the world, with this exhibition rightfully honing in on Madagascan life and lives.
And if that wasn’t enough, visitors can even experience a taste of Malagasy dishes curated by Malagasy chef Lilia Andrianavony of Lilia’s Kitchen, including coconut chicken, and a slow-braised beef cooked in ginger and Malagasy spice.
There’s all that and so much more at this year’s Orchid Festival, so be sure to get your tickets for this unmissable wintertime celebration.
