Another picture-perfect piece of real estate has just hit the property market. And if you fancy snapping yourself up a cliffside cottage that boasts a view as impressive as its list of former residents; this one might be right up your street promenade. Well, if you have a spare £1.75 million kicking about, that is.
Mermaid Cottage is one of four properties neatly nestled directly beneath the White Cliff’s of Dover. Offering some pretty jaw-dropping views across St Margaret’s Bay (and some even more jaw-dropping claims-to-fame); the picturesque pad is listed with the property-pros over at Strutt & Parker, who have hailed the chance to buy the seaside abode a “rare opportunity to acquire a spectacular house in an iconic beach location”.
The history of Mermaid Cottage
The house was previously owned by the legendary playwright, Noel Coward. He bought the waterside gaff in 1945, and lovingly-restored the property after it had been damaged by British and Canadian troops during D-Day training. Coward sold the coastal cottage in 1951 to none other than Ian Fleming, who used it as a weekend holiday home for several years.
It’s believed that many of Fleming’s notable Bond novels were written inside Mermaid Cottage. He was supposedly so inspired by the beauty of the White Cliffs, that he even used the area as the setting for his third James Bond novel, Moonraker.
Inside the property
The rather ravishing residence has been thoroughly renovated and modernised by its current owner (a James Bond fan who bought the property around 20 years ago). The interior of the property is everything you’d want and expect from a serene seaside home. Think calming colours, fresh decor, and huge windows offering a gorgeous glimpse out onto the ocean.
The 2000 square-foot property has a huge main reception room that spans the entirety of the front of the house, alongside three other reception rooms. Because why have one when you can have four, hey? There’s three bedrooms (one of which comes complete with a balcony), a fully-equipped gym, a deck, a courtyard, and a tropical-style garden that was designed by an RHS Chelsea Flower Show gold medal winner. No biggie.
Perched proudly on the Kent coastthis beautiful beach-front abode is less than two hours from London. So, if you’re in the market for a property with some pretty legendary literary links; now could be your chance.
