Mariah Carey has made herself synonymous with Christmas as she made one of the catchiest Christmas songs ever. “All I Want For Christmas Is You” will seemingly forever be on every Christmas playlist and is inescapable from December.
The song was released back in 1994 and became an instant hit. Although it did not reach number one in the US, it entered at number six, with number two in the UK singles charts. Since then, the song has returned to the charts every year and has topped the charts in second years since its release.

Because of the song’s success, Mariah has been called “The Queen of Christmas” and with all this constant clamoring for the song, Christmas is a cash cow for the singer.
This year, Mariah will celebrate 30 years of the hit and do a Christmas tour that goes around 20 cities in America. She co-wrote the song with her longtime collaborator Walter Afansieff as part of a Christmas album she released that year.
There were original plans for Mariah to just cover a Christmas classic and put her own spin on it. Instead, she decided to invent her own and decorated her house and studio in all things Christmas to get in the mood when she recorded the song in August 1994.
“All I Want For Christmas Is You” took Mariah and Walter 15 minutes to write and compose and earned the singer an average of about $3 million each Christmas, and it was reported on AP News that the song is soon expected to surpass $100 million in lifetime earnings .
The song has a bigger life now than ever with streaming making it even easier to listen to than it was before. Mariah adapted the song into a Book and it has been covered by a plethora of artists.
There are also many Mariah versions of the song, with one where she does a duet with Justin Bieber released in 2011. In 2019, the song broke three Guinness World Records with its Christmas ear mask.
One for having the most weeks in the UK Singles Top 10 chart for a Christmas song and another for the highest-charting holiday song on the Billboard US Hot 100 by a solo artist. The third was for having the most streamed song on Spotify in 24 hours for a woman.
