Most of the time, hitting the boozer in central London can deliver all sorts of surprises, but yesterday the unexpected went up a notch as Green Day surprised punters at The Marquis with a secret set.
The punk veterans are in town playing a still-relatively-intimate show at Camden’s Electric Ballroom tonight (November 10), but decided they needed a warm-up, and would just walk out into a pub and kick into Welcome To Paradise; as you do.
Green Day live-streamed the entire acoustic gig online, and had teased fans on Instragram earlier in the day, with drummer Tré Cool posting: “Right now, Green Day’s in London, looking to have us some fun then. If I were the fans, I wouldn’t make plans. Keep all your cellies plugged in.”
It’s coming up to 30 years since the release of the seminal Dookie (1994), and the set was heavily laden with its hits, as well as the first performance of Walking Contradiction from Insomniac (1995) since 2001.
You can watch the full set below.
Following their Marquis gig, the punk trio will play tonight in support of their upcoming record Saviors, which is slated for release on January 19, 2024.
If you missed out on their intimate gigs in London this week, you’ll still be able to catch them in the Big Smoke soon. Next summer, they’re out on a stadium tour, which includes a date at Wembley Stadium on June 29, where you will definitely have the time to listen to Billie Joe Armstrong whine as he plays Basket Case to an audience of 90,000.
