Durdle Door’s famous limestone arch jutting out into the sea

As summer finally sweeps across the UK, the nation’s coastlines come alive with sun-seekers, sandcastle architects, and swimmers braving the bitterly cold British seas. But who says you have to hop on a plane to find a world-class beach? Turns out, one of the planet’s most stunning stretches of coastline is right here at home – and nope, it’s not just us saying it.

According to National Geographic, Durdle Door in Dorset has officially made the cut as one of the 14 best beaches to visit in your lifetime.

Durdle Door: The Jurassic Coast’s Crown Jewel

Nestled on Dorset’s legendary Jurassic Coasta UNESCO World Heritage site – Durdle Door has earned its place among the planet’s most breathtaking beaches.

If you’ve ever seen a photo of the UK coastline, you’ve probably spotted Durdle Door’s famous limestone arch jutting out into the sea. It’s the kind of natural wonder that looks almost unreal – like something straight out of a fantasy film. The arch itself has been shaped by millions of years of waves crashing against the rock, and it’s so iconic that it’s up there with the Grand Canyon and the Great Barrier Reef in terms of global recognition.

The name “Durdle Door” itself harks back to the Old English word ‘thirl’, meaning “to pierce, bore, or drill”—a fitting tribute to the arch’s dramatic, sculpted form.

How to get to Durdle Door from London

Getting down to the beach is a bit of a workout (think 140 steps carved into the cliff), but the views are absolutely worth it. Once you’re down there, you can take in the dramatic scenery, snap a few envy-inducing photos, or just chill out on the shingle and watch the waves roll in. If you’re feeling adventurous, there’s a gorgeous coastal walk over to Lulworth Cove that takes about an hour and a half and trust us, the views along the way are next-level.

You can reach Durdle Door from London by taking a Southwest Trains service from London Waterloo to Woolthe nearest station, with the journey lasting between 2 hours 15 minutes and 2 hours 30 minutes depending on the train. Alternatively, National Express Coaches run several daily services from London Victoria Coach Station to Pooleone of the closest major towns to Durdle Door.

This summer, if you’re looking for somewhere seriously special to soak up the sun, Durdle Door should be at the top of your list. Who knew the UK could do beaches this good?
