Introduction: Why We Chose Dinner by Heston Blumenthal

Dinner by Heston Blumenthal is unlike any other restaurant in London. The kitchen takes inspiration from England’s oldest recipe books — manuscripts dating from the 13th century to the Victorian era — and reinterprets historic British dishes through modern techniques. Every dish on the menu is dated by the year of the original recipe (Meat Fruit c.1500, Powdered Duck c.1670, Tipsy Cake c.1810), making the dining room something between a restaurant and a culinary museum.

The kitchen has held two Michelin stars since 2014. Heston Blumenthal designed the concept with longtime collaborator Ashley Palmer-Watts. The Meat Fruit — chicken liver parfait disguised as a mandarin orange, complete with edible stem — has become one of the most-photographed dishes in London fine dining.

We chose to review Dinner because it represents the most distinctive concept on London’s two-star list. We have read the Michelin Guide, AA, TripAdvisor, Andy Hayler, Hardens, The Infatuation. (See also our reviews of London’s three-star and other two-star restaurants.)

Location & Getting There

The dining room sits on the ground floor of the Mandarin Oriental Hyde Park, with views over the park itself through tall windows. Entry is via the hotel’s main entrance on Knightsbridge.

By Tube

  • Knightsbridge (Piccadilly line) — 2 minutes’ walk west.
  • Hyde Park Corner (Piccadilly) — 8 minutes’ walk east.

First Impressions & Atmosphere

The dining room is the largest two-star space in London — 132 covers in a long, parkside room with a glass-walled rotisserie kitchen visible at the back. The pulley system suspending the spit-roast pineapples (used in the Tipsy Cake dessert) is itself one of the most-photographed features. Service is professional Mandarin Oriental standard — warm, attentive, never rushed.

The Menu

Signature Dishes (every menu)

  • Meat Fruit (c.1500) — Chicken liver and foie gras parfait disguised as a mandarin orange. The most-photographed dish in London.
  • Powdered Duck (c.1670) — Duck breast with smoked anchovies, umbles and turnip. A cult main course.
  • Tipsy Cake (c.1810) — Brioche soaked in sweet sherry, butterscotch and vanilla cream, served with spit-roasted pineapple. The signature dessert.
  • Hereford Ribeye (c.1830) — Slow-roasted with mushroom ketchup and triple-cooked chips.

À la Carte (£155, 3 courses)

Three courses with full flexibility across signature and seasonal dishes.

5-Course Tasting (£195)

Walks through the most accomplished current preparations including Meat Fruit and Tipsy Cake.

Wine

The list is one of London’s deepest at any tier — approximately 2,000 bins. Pairings start at £125.

Pricing & Value for Money

£155 for three courses à la carte and £195 for the five-course tasting are competitive at two-star tier. Wine pairings at £125 are among the lowest at this Michelin level.

What Diners Actually Say

TripAdvisor 4.5/5 from 8,500+ reviews — among the most-reviewed two-star rooms in London. Hardens top score; Andy Hayler 17/20.

What Diners Love Most

  1. Meat Fruit. The mandarin-disguised parfait is genuinely one of London’s most accomplished single dishes.
  2. Tipsy Cake with spit-roasted pineapple. The signature dessert; the rotisserie pineapples are part of the show.
  3. Historic-recipe concept. Genuinely educational — every dish dated to its source manuscript.
  4. Hyde Park view. Tall windows overlook the park.
  5. Mandarin Oriental service. Among London’s most polished hotel-restaurant service.
  6. Wine programme. 2,000+ bins make this one of London’s deepest cellars.
  7. Powdered Duck. Cult main course; rarely ordered but consistently praised.
  8. Less austere than peers. The room is grand but not stuffy — couples and families both at home.

Areas for Consideration

  1. The room is large. 132 covers means it can feel less intimate than 30-50 cover two-star peers.
  2. Heston Blumenthal himself is rarely present. The concept is his; day-to-day cooking is run by the kitchen team.
  3. Some dishes can feel showy. The historic-recipe concept divides opinion — most love it; some find it conceptual.
  4. Pricing is firmly two-star. £155-£195 places it among London’s more expensive options.

Who Is Dinner by Heston Blumenthal Best For?

✅ Particularly good for:

  • First-time fine-dining diners (the concept is genuinely engaging)
  • Visitors to London (the historic-British concept is unmissable)
  • Couples wanting a grand Hyde Park view
  • Lovers of culinary history
  • Wine collectors (2,000+ bins)

⚠️ Less suitable for:

  • Diners seeking small, intimate rooms
  • Hard-core ingredient minimalists
  • Diners hoping for a Heston sighting (rare)
