If you’re a David Bowie fanatic and you’ve got half a million pounds to splash and you’re looking for a new place to live, this just might be the place for you. An innocuous house in Bromley has recently been listed for sale in Bromley – which was once David Bowie’s childhood home. That’s right, you could live in the very same property that David Bowie once did.
Now, it bears noting that the house itself doesn’t possess much in the way of David Bowie-isms. Bowie didn’t even really spend much of his childhood there. According to the Bromley Civic Society, David Bowie’s family only lived in the property for a brief time – in between Bowie being born in Southwark and the family settling in a house on nearby Plaistow Grove.
So, even if Bowie’s likely active childhood imagination was dreaming up characters that potentially could have become his iconic artistic alter-egos (such as Ziggy Stardust and the Thin White Duke), the house doesn’t bear any traces of these days. Plus, given the time that has passed since he lived there, the house has undergone a few ‘Ch-ch-changes’. Instead, it’s simply a pleasant two-bed, end-of-terrace house.
Inside David Bowie’s childhood home
The property listing from Leaders describes the house as a “charming 2-bedroom period terraced house”. According to the estate agents, the property “exudes a sense of peace and tranquillity, making it the perfect place to call home” – and perhaps write some of the most iconic and popular music in recorded history. You know, in case you want to follow in Bowie’s footsteps…
The property is listed at £449,500, a pretty hefty increase of almost 360% from its last sale price of £124,999 in December of 2014. However, this does seem to be the going price for the area – with nearby properties hovering around the same price and even breaking over £500,000. It doesn’t seem that Bowie’s childhood stint in the house has made much difference to the asking price. After all, he did only live there for a year!
