After dealing with the public scandal after Fyre Festival, Andy’s attitude towards the public has changed in recent years. Instead of hiding behind a veil of anonymity, he’s taken the front seat in directing his next moves. On top of his appearance Anonymous season 1 proves that she’s not afraid to be herself in any way, even when she has to go undercover. With Anonymous proving that he can work under pressure and use his social skills to his advantage, Andy makes moves. Speaking about the show, Andy is excited to introduce himself again Anonymous.
: I’m curious what drew you to it Anonymous ?
I think one of the biggest factors that made me interested in doing the show was to really reintroduce the world to the real Andy King. Everyone has a picture of me, a really interesting visual, all from Fyre Festival. I thought this is the perfect opportunity to help me change the story and let the world know the real Andy King. I think they could do it in the show or they do.
: From what I’ve seen, absolutely – it was a great re-introduction for you. Your everyday life is obviously a lot different than a reality TV competition, you haven’t done anything quite like it as far as I know Anonymous before. How did you feel that your skills as an event planner came to the fore in your life? How were they translated?
Well, you know – think about it… my meme is being the ultimate team player – America’s Team Player, that’s a new extension of my new and improved meme. As the best team player, I have a Gift for people skills. I have a gift for getting to know people and understanding them quickly. I can read a room like no one else can. I have a sneaking suspicion that would be a great giveaway and feature in this show. I think everyone will see as the episodes go by that it turns out to be true.
: I agree! I think the people skills were probably surprising to people who have only seen you in one context before, it was interesting to see you pivot and bring it out elsewhere.
It was difficult, as I’m sure you can imagine, going from Anonymous to the real world, and I was probably much stronger in one-on-one conversations. I’m like pick up the phone and call me, let’s talk about it. I’m not the type to do
(mimes text messages)
all this, but it was fun to be in Anonymous mode as well.
: I’m curious, since you mentioned that you’re more of a real, face-to-face person, what made you choose Jack Usher as an alliance at the beginning of the game?
Jack and I walked into the show together, and as it turned out, we were actually probably on the same plane filming. We’re both New Yorkers and I love that he’s a math teacher but also a comedian. As much of the world may know, Zach Galifianakis was one of my first interns and worked for me for a year or two in New York in the late 90s. I went through the world of standup comedy with Zach. That was probably one of my biggest bonds with Jack, he’s incredible.
: It’s amazing, what a connection. I’m curious about your quick reveal – I’m sure people recognized you right away, but do you think staying anonymous about your past if they hadn’t helped your game, or did you want to be upfront about who you were?
After years of Fyre, the festival usually quickly becomes the big elephant in the room. It’s just starting to become a heavy load. I’m the guy who gets on stage to give a speech about endurance and failing to like 10,000 people, and I let it out pretty quickly. I feel like it just takes the pressure off and helps me be myself. I went through a period where some counselors said never talk or tell anyone you’re in it. If someone asks, fine, but I’ll never bring it up myself – but I thought to myself, I’m proud that I had the opportunity to spend six weeks trying to save the most luxurious music festival in the world. Apparently that didn’t happen. I am proud that I worked so hard.
I felt revealing to me
Anonymous
was so important and I tried to show people that what you see is what you get. I’m Andy King, I’m the ultimate team player
any
somehow trying to keep the world happy… and I will do whatever it takes to get the job done or to win. So let’s see what happens.
: That’s such an interesting way to put it, because I think carrying a heavy secret around in a game where you’re trying to switch between communication modes is probably too difficult. Did you feel like switching to Anonymous because it was hard for you and got easier over time?
I think so. I mean, think about it – for me, in my life, probably in a different way than most other players. There are a lot of backstabbing people out there, there are a lot of people who have nothing better to do than vent their anger – and that’s not me, that’s never going to be me.
Anonymous
described as a social experiment… I lived in a social experiment most of my life. I live that life every day. When you become high profile, people will come at you from different directions. I’m blessed because 90% of the people who come up against me love Andy King and then there’s 10% haters. So I’m pretty lucky about that and I felt like it was a great quality to bring to the show.
: My last question for you – without giving too much away, what do you think is the best word to describe the first season Anonymous.
Ooh, I mean I’d like to say “crazy”… it’s crazy, absolutely crazy.
