KöD – A Danish Steakhouse Experience
Sunday lunch is a highlight of my week! It’s the perfect time to reconnect with loved ones over great food. At London Unattached, we’ve been exploring some of the best Sunday lunch options London has to offer. We recently discovered the Danish restaurant KöD, tucked away in the handsome Devonshire Square in the heart of the city, just a short walk from Liverpool Street station.
KöD is a successful Danish restaurant group celebrating its 10th anniversary this year. They currently operate three locations in Denmark—two in Copenhagen, as well as three in Norway. Their London City restaurant, which opened in 2023, was their seventh location and they are also planning to open a branch in Soho very soon. On the day of our visit, it was a pleasantly warm and sunny day in the city. The square was set with tables, which were full of happy-looking diners.
However, we sat inside and enjoyed the uber-cool Scandi-style décor. A map of Denmark adorns the open brick wall, and it boasts a rustic wooden floor, accompanied by a palette of inky blue hues, blue leather banquettes, sleek black and blue bentwood chairs, a chain mail curtain, handsome globe lights and industrial factory iron windows overlooking the square. KöD which means meat in Danish, is primarily a steakhouse. On Sundays, they offer a tempting ‘all you can eat’ special – Steak Chips à la KöD. Here you can enjoy KöD’s tender tri-tip roast and chicken wings with side orders of seasonal salad and Madagascar pepper sauce. All these dishes are replenishable, provided the entire table orders the Sunday Roast and you have the appetite!
We were served by Drew, who was a dream – super friendly and helpful throughout our meal. It really makes a difference when the staff are as lovely as this. We were feeling rather Sunday morning-ish and needed a pick-me-up. KöD’s fab Espresso Martinis did just the trick.
The Sunday menu brings the dishes as they are ready. I’m not usually a fan of chicken wings, but whatever these guys do – my, did these juicy wings taste good!
The finely cut roast beef with rosemary and sea salt comes medium-cooked unless you ask otherwise. Set on a stoneware platter, we tucked into the most perfectly cooked, tender and flavoursome, high-quality steak I’ve eaten in a long time. The jug of rich red wine and tarragon gravy was a delicious addition.
On the side proper homemade crispy chips with fresh thyme and sea salt …truly scrumptious! And a fabulously fresh Ceasar Salad, with romaine lettuce, Caesar dressing, crunchy croutons and lashings of Old Winchester cheese. Paired with a glass of rose… perfect!
The portions were ideal for me and my companion, but I did see a table with a group of young guys who looked like they were able to take advantage of the ‘all you can eat’ offer.
However, we did leave room for dessert (which is not included in the deal). Drew told us that the most popular item on the menu was the homemade fried apple pie. I opted for this, and it was a great choice…a cross between an apple strudel and a crumble, featuring warm apple compote laced with cinnamon in a crisp puff pastry, topped with crunchy sweet nuggets of charred white chocolate and sorrel, served with vanilla ice cream.
If you haven’t got KöD on your radar yet, you should. It’s a fantastic offer with a fun, buzzing atmosphere and great food, I’ll be back!
