Warner Bros. returns to Roald Dahl’s candy-coated world with its big-screen prequel, 2023 Wonka.
Starring the likes of Timothée Chalamet and Hugh Grant, this movie musical expands the world of Dahl’s classic novel. Charlie and the Chocolate Factorywhich tells the origin story of the franchise’s iconic chocolate bean along with other characters alongside Willy Wonka.
Directed by PaddingtonPaul King, Wonka is another family-friendly affair for the filmmaker, hitting theaters just before Christmas to capitalize on eager moviegoers looking for something to watch during the holiday season.

Timothée Chalamet – Willy Wonka
Stepping behind the shoes of the likes of Johnny Depp and Gene Wilder, Timothée Chalamet will take on the role of Willy Wonka in 2023. Wonka.
This prequel finds Chalamet’s chocolate machine creating the basis for his candy empire and dreaming up a factory that will eventually become central to Willy Wonka’s story.
Chalamet is one of the fastest rising stars in Hollywood and has already appeared in massive blockbusters such as Dune, Lady Birdand Little women.
Calah Lane – Noodle
Calah Lane takes on the role of Noodle in Roald Dahl’s prequel.
Noodle is Willy’s kindred spirit who befriends an enterprising candy maker and is drawn to his optimism and smugness after living life under his employers Scrubbit and Bleacher.
Lane is best known for his work in Laurel Here we are but has also appeared Reuniting the family, Firebudsand Netflix Hollywood.
Keegan-Michael Key – Chief of Police
WonkaComedian Keegan-Michael Key brings the monstrous police chief to life.
Keys Wonka the character works for the chocolate cartel and is on the ground in their fight to keep the new chocolate companies out of town.
Key previously starred in and helped create the sketch comedy series Key & Peelewith other credits The Super Mario Bros. Movie, Keanuand Predator.
Paterson Joseph – Arthur Slugworth
Play from the icon Charlie and the Chocolate Factory the villain Arthur Slugworth is Paterson Joseph.
Slugworth is the head of a chocolate cartel that controls a candy-coated monopoly in the small town he controls. He acts as the main villain Wonkatrying to stop Willy from fulfilling his sugary dreams.
Joseph’s past works include e.g Sleet, Nowhereand Aeon Flux.
Matt Lucas – Prodnose
Working under Arthur Slugworth is Matt Lucas’ Prodnose. Podnose is another chocolatier (and member of the Chocolate Cartel) interested in thwarting Willy Wonka’s chocolate-making ambitions.
Lucas’s most famous credits include Bridesmaids, Little Britainand Tim Burton Alice in Wonderland movies.
Mathew Baynton – Ficklegruber
Another leading member of the Chocolate Cartel consortium is Ficklegruber (played by Mathew Baynton).
As Chalamet’s charismatic leading man is one of the giant confectioners at odds with Willy Wonka, he wins him over with a little sugar, spice and everything nice.
Baynton is one of the creators of the British hit series ghosts as well as the one that appeared before The wrong men, Chargeand Tonight you are mine.
Sally Hawkins – Willy Wonka’s mother
Never before seen on screen has Willy Wonka’s mother; however, that everything changes Wonka.
Sally Hawkins brings to life the matriarch of the Wonka family, shapes her son’s ambition and opens his mind to dream his wildest dreams.
Hawkings is an Oscar-nominated actor known for his roles The shape of water, Blue jasmineand Happy Go Lucky.
Rowan Atkinson – Father Julius
Rowan Atkinson takes on the role of Father Julius in the film Wonka.
Father Julius is a corrupt priest and one of the bad actors who dampens the fun in the film’s small town. He also works under the chocolate cartel.
As one of the most recognizable names in British comedy, Atkinson is familiar to fans Mr. Bean, The Lion Kingand Man vs. Bee.
Jim Carter – Abacus Crunch
Abacus Crunch (played by Jim Carter) is one of the locals on Chalamet’s Willy Wonka side.
While he complicates the young entrepreneur’s expectations about the future of his candy business, he is the first to tell Willy about the dangers of the chocolate cartel.
In the movie, Crunch is one of the residents trapped in Bleacher and Scrubbit’s illegal operations, and this is where he meets Willy.
Crunch is also Slugworth’s former accountant who discovered his evil schemes.
Carter’s previous credits include Downton Abbey, Transformers: The Last Knightand Shakespeare in Love.
Tom Davis – Bleacher
Tom Davis plays Bleacher, a local businessman who – along with Mrs. Scrubbit – uses the talents of Calah Lane’s Noodle.
In addition to Noodle, Bleacher also tricks Willy into getting a cheap room at Mrs. Scrubbit’s apartment, and it is later revealed that the paper he signed was an employment contract instead.
Davis can also be seen Paddington 2, Murder in Succesvilleand Free fire.
Olivia Colman – Mrs. Scrubbit
Filmmaker Paul King describes it as a “a true Dahl-esque grotesque character” (via Empire) is Olivia Colman’s Mrs. Scrubs.
He is a crooked-nosed evil Scrooge-like character that Noodle, Willy and the others work for.
Scrubbit also deals with Arthur Slugworth due to the latter’s hidden ties to Noodle.
Colman is an Oscar-winning actor who has won for his work during 2018 Favorite. But he has also appeared in titles like Crown on Netflix and Marvel Studios Secret attack.
Hugh Grant – Sublime
Hugh Grant plays the original Oompa-Loompa, Lofty.
Lofty is Willy’s first pint-sized sidekick who comes from a faraway land to steal Mr. Wonka’s chocolate for a long-standing debt.
It is revealed that Willy stole something from the Oompa-Loompa’s homeland, leading to Lofty’s crusade to annoy the chocolate maker.
Grant performed earlier in the year Love actually, Notting Hilland Four weddings and a funeral.
Natasha Rothwell – Piper Benz
Natasha Rothwell’s Piper Benz is one of the employees tricked by Bleacher and the Scrubs into working for them.
Piper is also one of the locals who support Willy’s dreams of taking down the chocolate cartel and starting a candy business.
Rothwell previously worked as a writer Saturday Night Live and appeared on HBO White lotus and Uncertain.
Rich Fulcher – Larry Chucklesworth
Rich Fulcher’s Larry Chucklesworth is a local comedian turned Bleacher and Scrubbit employee.
Like Abacus and Piper, Larry also helps Willy sneak in and out of Scrubbit’s place to achieve his dream of making chocolate.
Fulcher can also be seen inside The Mighty Boosh, Marriage Storyand Frustration.
Rakhee Thakrar – Lottie Bell
Lottie Bell (played by Rakhee Thakar) is a local telephone operator Wonka and one of the trapped individuals working under Bleacher and Scrubbit.
Although he doesn’t speak much at first, Willy and the others are surprised to learn that he is actually a telephone operator, before being tricked into working for the diabolical couple.
Thakrar just finished playing Emily Sands in the hit Netflix series Gender education but it’s also familiar to fans Page eightand EastEnders.
Tim Fitzhigham – the ship’s captain
The ship that brings Willy home from his travels abroad at the beginning of the film is captained by Tim Fitzhigham.
Fitzhigham’s past includes e.g After this, Paddington 2and Reserved.
Kobna Holdbrook-Smith – An honest cop
Kobnan Holbrook-Smith is a police officer who works alongside the Chief of Police.
While her boss works for the chocolate cartel, Holbrook-Smith’s unnamed officer is one of the good guys who arrests her boss at the end of the film.
The Ghanaian-British actor is best known for his work Mary Poppins returns and Zack Snyder’s Justice League.
Simon Farnaby – Bash
Simon Farnaby is a British comedian and actor who plays Bash, a zookeeper who is tricked by Willy and Noodle into eating chocolate to get in to get the giraffe’s milk.
Farnaby’s previous credits include ghosts and Paddington 2.
Colin O’Brien – Young Willy Wonka
Colin O’Brien is a rising talent to join the ranks Wonka cast, and he plays a younger version of Timothée Chalamet’s title character.
Wonka marks the actor’s first major big screen acting venture after appearing in TV series such as Grey’s anatomy and Dear Edward.
Ellie White – Gwennie (Mistress of the Eye)
British comedian Ellie White performs as part Wonka like Gwennie.
The character is also known as Mistress of the Keys, a guard assigned to watch over the chocolate cartel’s vaults.

Tracy Ifeachor – Dorothy Smith
British TV and film actress Tracy Ifeachor will perform Wonka as Dorothy Smith, Noodle’s estranged mother who thought her daughter was dead.

Daddy Suttie
Isy Suttie is a stand-up comedian known for her musical stylings on stage, so she’s a perfect fit for the melodic mayhem that ensues Wonka.

Freya Parker – Miss Bon-Bon
British character actress Freya Parker performs Wonka like Miss Bon-Bon, Slugworth’s loyal assistant and butler of the Chocolate Cartel.
Parker is best known for his performances Jurassic World Dominion, Nerveand Late Night Mash.
Justin Edwards – The green-skinned client
Justin Edwards plays one of the customers accidentally poisoned by the chocolate cartel’s machinations. The character’s skin turns green after eating Willy Wonka’s chocolate.
Wonka is Justin Edwards’ second collaboration with director Paul King after previously doing some acting Paddington 2.
The actor has also appeared in e.g 1917, Thor: The Dark Worldand Black mirror.
