The Watermill Theatre has announced the world premiere stage adaptation of Murder Before Evensongbased on the bestselling novel by Reverend Richard Coles.

The new production will run at the award-winning Newbury venue from Friday 25 September to Saturday 14 November, with a national press night on Tuesday 29 September.

Adapted for the stage by Paul Hart and Shaun McKenna, Murder Before Evensong marks the pair’s first collaboration since their multi award-winning 2023 production of The Lord of the Rings.

Set in 1988, the story unfolds in the seemingly idyllic village of Champton, centred around St Mary’s Church where traditions and long held relationships shape daily life.

At the heart of the parish are Canon Daniel Clement, his formidable mother Audrey, and his actor brother Theo, whose lives are thrown into turmoil when a shocking murder disrupts the community.

As suspicion spreads and long buried secrets emerge, Daniel becomes drawn into a dangerous investigation that reveals a darker side to the village.

Framed by the rhythms of church life, the production promises a gripping and atmospheric mystery where trust is tested and everyone becomes a potential suspect.

Paul Hart said “I’ve been a huge admirer of Richard’s Canon Clement series for a long time and the opportunity to bring this world to the stage for the first time is thrilling. The sense of community and village life is at the centre of the book, and I think this will work so well at the Watermill. And to work with Shaun Mckenna on adapting this for the stage has been a dream – we last worked together on The Lord of the Rings so he can do anything!”

Richard Coles said “I’m delighted that the Watermill is going a-murdering before Evensong and can’t wait to see how this brilliant adaptation will look.”

During the run, audiences can also attend An Audience with Richard Coles on Friday 16 October 2026 at 2.30pm, featuring a post event book signing and with profits supporting the Watermill Theatre’s ongoing work.
