From today, Wednesday, October 29 2025women across England can access the morning-after pill free of charge at almost 10,000 community pharmacies nationwide.

This marks the biggest change to sexual health services since the 1960s and is hailed as a game-changer in making reproductive healthcare more accessible.

Emergency contraceptive is now free of charge for women

Previously, while emergency contraception was free at sexual health clinics and GP surgeries, pharmacies often charged up to £30.

This created an unfair postcode lottery where access largely depended on location. Now, the oral emergency contraception pill can be obtained at a pharmacy without the need for an appointment, making it far easier and quicker to get crucial care.

Health minister Stephen Kinnock emphasised that this move removes barriers to reproductive care that have let women down for too long.

NHS England’s national clinical director for women’s health, Dr Sue Mannsaid this reform lets women “just pop into their local pharmacy and get the oral emergency contraceptive pill free of charge without needing to make an appointment.” She noted that community pharmacists are trusted professionals who offer confidential advice to support women’s healthcare needs.

This initiative is part of a broader NHS plan to rebuild and expand community pharmacy services, including consultations for contraceptive pills and support for patients newly prescribed antidepressants. It aligns with the NHS’s 10 Year Health Plan to shift care into community settings convenient for patients, with 80% of people living within a 20-minute walk of a pharmacy.

National Pharmacy Association chief executive Henry Gregg called the rollout “good news for patients and pharmacies alike,” ending the postcode lottery for emergency contraception access. Pharmacy chains like Boots and Superdrugas well as independent stores, are all participating, helping tens of thousands of women across the country.

Community pharmacy services can also help with prescriptions for common conditions, providing greater ease for patients seeking care without always needing a GP appointment.

Find out where you can get the morning after pill for free near you

You can find your local pharmacy here via the NHS – and can see whether it offers free emergency contraception by typing in your postcode and clicking through to the ‘contraceptive services’ section.

This new free access aims to foster equality in reproductive healthcare and reduce pressure on other NHS services, supporting timely and confidential access to emergency contraception for all women across England.
