The entrance to the 90 Years of Penguin pop-up

One of London’s best-loved literary locales is throwing the ultimate birthday bash for Penguin Booksand absolutely everyone is invited. To celebrate 90 years of the pioneering publishing house, Waterstones Piccadilly (AKA the biggest bookshop in Europe) has launched an extra-special, carefully-curated pop-up installation, featuring over 1000 books from Penguin’s archives.

Born in the 1930s out of frustration at the lack of reading material available to the public; Penguin Books has continuously blazed the trail for literary-lovers across the world. And so it’s only right that they’re celebrating their 90th birthday in style. Taking over the entire ground floor of the flagship store, 90 Years of Penguin will bring to life the rich history of the brand; giving bookworms and bibliophiles the chance to ‘discover and interact with groundbreaking and diverse publications‘ from across the past nine decades.

90 Years of Penguin at Waterstones Piccadilly

The installation is filled to the brim with a humongous range of booksfrom cloth-bound classics to recent releases. There will be a dedicated space where Waterstones booksellers can showcase the specific titles they’ve loved over the years, and visitors will also have the chance to feast their eyes on cabinets packed full of Penguin memorabilia, curiosities, and collectibles.

The pop-up shop is completely free to visit and will be hosting a series of exciting events throughout the summer. From live recordings of the Penguin podcast to a Penguin-themed quiz; it’s set to be a completely and utter haven for book-lovers of the capital city.

Bea CarvalhoHead of Books at Waterstonessaid: “It is with great joy that we launch this space, which acts as a snapshot of 90 years of publishing excellence, to showcase the rich and varied history of Penguin Books and its close collaboration with Waterstones over many years. We can’t wait to welcome readers to our iconic flagship to browse 90 Years of Penguin at Waterstones Piccadilly this summer.”

The Penguin pop-up shop will be taking place on the Lower Ground Floor of Waterstones London Piccadilly. It will be open between 9am-9pm (Mondays to Saturdays) and between 12pm-6pm (Sundays) until August 31. Find out more and plan your visit here.
