The history of Mermaid Cottage
The house was previously owned by the legendary playwright, Noel Coward. He bought the waterside gaff in 1945, and lovingly-restored the property after it had been damaged by British and Canadian troops during D-Day training. Coward sold the coastal cottage in 1951 to none other than Ian Fleming, who used it as a weekend holiday home for several years.
It’s believed that many of Fleming’s notable Bond novels were written inside Mermaid Cottage. He was supposedly so inspired by the beauty of the White Cliffs, that he even used the area as the setting for his third James Bond novel, Moonraker.
