Marks & Spencer invests £ 95 million in the wage increase of retail staff, despite the government’s “cost pressures”.

Starting from 1 April, Marks & Spencer’s customer assistants will increase from £ 12.60 per hour, reflecting 5%of the year and 26%growth since 2022.

The new wage percentage of £ 12.60 per hour is higher than the government’s national wage of £ 12.21 per hour.

“It is not a secret after the government’s recent tax and national premiums that M&S and the entire retail industry have some significant costs, which in the new financial year,” said Stuart Machin, CEO of M&S.

“However, I have always believed that we should not let these headwinds influence our hourly pay colleagues, which is why we do this in a row today in a row that we will make a record investment in our salary offer.

“This means that we have now invested nearly £ 300 million in the last three years, well above inflationary levels, market leading discount and pension offer to colleagues,” Machin added.

Prior to this announcement, Marks & Spencer estimates that the increase in employers’ national insurance (NICS) will increase £ 120 million to its payroll, which is expected to continue to rise.

The change to NIC, especially the lower threshold, became a shock to companies with labor-intensive, part-time reliant areas such as hospitality and retail.

The study of Ukhospitration has stated that changes to national premiums (NICS) will increase £ 1,500 for the employment costs of an average employee.

Earlier this year, M&S was part of a group of large retailers, which warned the Ministry of Finance about the risk of hundreds of thousands of job losses due to unsustainable retail cost trips.

At that time, Machin stated that “retail is robbed like a savings bank and cannot be accepted.”

“The boring truth is… Budget means that the UK retail will decrease,” Machin wrote in the Times program and added that while Reeves’ long-term growth targets are welcome “measures (must be taken) to promote growth nowadays.”
