The Princess Diana Memorial Playground In Kensington Gardens Is Set To Close For A £3M Makeover

London’s most famous playground is about to close for an epic £3M transformation projectwith the Royal Parks preparing to close the much-loved park to carry out this six month refurb.

The Princess Diana Memorial Playground in Kensington Gardens opened back in 2000 to commemorate the late Princess of Wales—and this renewal plans to bring new life to the already fabulous playground for kids.

The Royal Parks charity, who manage all of the eight Royal Parks in London, have dropped incredible new renderings of the transformation, including a virtual walk-through of the proposals.

Famed for its link to the beloved fairytale Peter Pan, the new playground will keep its celebrated theme, but plans to be more inclusive and accessible for everyone—including more challenging physical play for the older kids.

A new Galleon (or Captain Hook’s pirate ship) will be constructed with sustainably-sourced timber over three levels, and will even include wheelchair accessible spaces.

There will also be a new multiple-level Tree House Encampment, providing a fresh space for children to climb and play at different heights, featuring children to climb and play at different heights.

However, it doesn’t stop there. The adored Mermaid Fountain will also be getting a marvellous makeover, expanding the water and sand areas for children who love sensory play—all while creating a better infrastructure that allows runoff water to be collected and reused for irrigation.

Keeping the kids shaded and cool, new tree planting and sensory, allergy-friendly and pollinator-friendly planting is set to make the playground look more vibrant and inviting, alongside new seating and paths which will improve access for all.

Andy Williams, Park Manager, Kensington Gardens says: “It’s been wonderful to welcome millions and millions of children to what is arguably the most famous playground in the world, set against the beautiful backdrop of Kensington Gardens.

“We’re delighted to share the first designs for this exciting renewal which will retain the character of the existing playground, but will incorporate new improved features, inspiring children to be curious about the natural environment, for many years.”
