A colourful display of digital butterflies on the huge floor to ceiling screens at Outernet

A magically mesmerising mixed reality experience has just landed in the capital city, welcoming Londoners and beyond to embark on a breathtakingly immersive journey – without having to pay a penny. The innovative experience in question comes in the form of The Butterfly Trail; a dazzling digital display that allows visitors to interact with beautiful butterflies on Outernet London’s rather hefty high-tech screens.

The free-to-visit Butterfly Trail has been designed by Pixel Artworksand is returning to Outernet’s Now Building for a limited run this festive season. The groundbreaking technology that’s been used to create the trail pushes the boundaries of digital design, giving visitors the chance to hold a digital butterfly on the tip of their finger, release magical AR butterflies, and trigger real-time animations.

The Butterfly Trail at Outernet London

The enchanting experience marks Outernet’s most ambitious experience yetand will play across the venue’s huge floor-to-ceiling wrap-around screens (the most advanced in the world). The trail guides visitors through Professor Peter Pelgrin’s botanical workshop and into his glass house, where they can interact and explore the stunning sights using their smartphones.

Outernet London is the UK’s most-visited cultural attractionpipping to the post the legendary likes of Natural History Museum and the British Museum. Not too shabby, hey?

Alexandra PayneCreative Director at Outernet Londonsaid: “Pixel Artworks are leaders in their field when it comes to combining breath-taking visuals and interactive technology and I’m proud of partner with them once again on this incredible experience. This is truly a global first and I cannot wait for visitors to be truly immersed in the world of The Butterfly Trail on the most advanced screens in the world.”

Tom BurchManaging Director at Pixel Artworkssaid: “Launching The Butterfly Trail at Outernet, one of the UK’s most visited attractions, with such innovative experiential technology helps us break creative boundaries with audiences looking for new, exciting immersive experiences. The Butterfly Trail will be shown at various times at Outernet’s Now Buildings until January 1, 2026. The viewing times are subject to change, so you can find out more and plan your visit here.
