The market – also known as St Nicholas Fair – will open today (Thursday, November 16) – and run until Friday, December 22.
Stall holders have been setting up their alpine chalets in York’s Parliament Street and St Sampson’s Square over the last few days, and is open now.
Event organiser Make It York, the city’s destination management organisation, says the chalets will create “a festive wonderland of local traders and artisan products”.
Make It York said that in 2022, York’s Christmas activities influenced 75 per cent of visitors to come to York, with 49 per cent of visitors visiting for the Christmas market alone.
It added that research into 2022 showed that York Christmas Market had a positive impact on other businesses within the city.
However, the market is not always popular with residents as the city centre becomes very busy during the festive period.
