Xbox boss Matt Booty discussed the reasoning behind it Indiana Jones and the Great Circle not coming to PS5 at launch.
More than ten years after his last video game adventure, Indy is back with his hat and whip in hand with a new digital adventure Wolfenstein developed by Machine Games.
A big circle was first announced in January 2021, just months after Microsoft acquired Machine Games’ parent company, Bethesda.
This put the game in a murky spot in terms of its potential exclusivity, which is further complicated by the fact that Xbox Games Studios titles have recently begun to migrate to the PS5.
Xbox Boss Talks Indiana Jones on PS5
As Indiana Jones and the Great Circle has been released for the Xbox Series X/S, Xbox boss Matt Booty pointed out what went into its PS5 release date decision.
In August, it was revealed A big circle would be the latest Xbox exclusive to come to Sony’s console; However, that would do so several months after the title’s original launch on Xbox and PC, in the murky Spring 2025 release window.
Following the game’s Xbox release, Microsoft’s head of game content and studios, Matt Booty, spoke to Variety about this staggered release.
“We make (exclusivity and windowing) decisions on a game-by-game basis.” Booty posted:
“We make (exclusivity and windowing) decisions on a game-by-game basis. And each of our studios is in a slightly different position. The game also has a production timeline, so the decision on spacing comes there first.”
He also revealed that the PS5 release decision was ultimately a “production” one above all others:
“We want to make sure our Xbox players have a great experience, and then the difference (when it becomes available on PlayStation) is as much a production decision as anything else. This is a game that was in production before we even bought Bethesda.”
Why is Indiana Jones taking so long to come to PS5?
So far, Xbox’s shifting release strategy hasn’t had a consistent pattern for games coming to PlayStation 5.
Fans have yet to see an Xbox Game Studios title come to Sony’s console and Xbox on a daily basis. Most of the releases so far have been old titles from over a year ago, such as Hi-Fi Rush and Sea of Thieves.
Indiana Jones and the Great Circle is the first tentpole Xbox release to move to PlayStation 5 so close to launch, perhaps setting the standard for how things will work going forward.
With the game given a spring 2025 PS5 release date, that could mean A big circle it may take several months to come to PlayStation. Spring in the gaming industry can mean anywhere between March and June, when a lot of questions about the release are still hanging in the air.
Because, as Booty stated, Machine Games Indy game (which takes place a year after the first Indiana Jones movie) was in development before Microsoft bought Bethesda, the parent company of Machine Games. This delayed release may be due to existing contracts that were entered into prior to the transaction in question.
If that’s the case, not much can be inferred from Xbox’s overall strategy Indiana Jones and the Great Circle.
However, this has recently been reported by industry insiders such as Xbox reporter Jez Corden “Xbox will have no exclusive offers” instead, from now on only works with timed exclusives:
“Xbox will have no exclusives going forward. Everything is timed exclusivity at most.”
So it can also mean Indy may actually be a trend-setter for the company in the future.
With all the variables around a large circleit may not be the best bellwether for fans to use, but to focus on when/if there will be Xbox Game Studios games outside of Bethesda, such as Fable and Gears of War: E-Day (read more on the subject Gears of War: E-Day release predictions here) will be released for PS5.
