Niles talked rough because he was “different.” Niles struggled in school and couldn’t get along with people. He was diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder and explained that it had been difficult for him both physically and mentally.

Niles can be very boring, which has affected his ability to have normal relationships. Niles worked as a peer attorney, but also did deliveries to earn extra money. Meanwhile, Matilda had no work at home. He had to help his mother sell plantains after his father died. Matilda liked to go to shopping malls and clubs. Her small town was not enough for Matilda’s big dreams. She wanted to marry Niles as soon as possible so that she could move to the United States. Niles visited Mahmoud’s Jewelry in Accra where he bought an engagement ring for Matilda. He felt the need to propose to her in person. He thought it would be a good idea to tell Matilda that they had to postpone the wedding while he proposed to her. He didn’t know if it was going to ease the anger, but he felt it was his best idea.

He hoped Matilda would see that he was going to come back and marry her because his love for her was much deeper and much more timeless than any deadline they set for themselves. He proposed to her at the memorial to the first president of Ghana. Later that night, Niles and Matilda headed to a club called Zen Garden. Niles defied the noisy environment by wearing noise-canceling earplugs. He had to concentrate and tell Matilda the truth.

Matilda was very happy because it was not common in Ghana for someone to plan such a romantic proposal. He was looking forward to getting to Kumasi to prepare for their wedding.
