Speaking to The Direct at San Diego Comic-Con, renowned game director Ed Boon offered fans hope for a possible release. Injustice 3.
Developed by Boon studio NetherRealm Mortal Kombat the creator has ventured beyond his raw fantasy universe over the past decade, leveraging his team’s fighting game prowess to set his sights on the world of DC Comics.
The fruits of these efforts have been Injustice titles, a pair of fighting games from the beloved studio that were released in 2013 and 2017. However, more than seven years after joining the last franchise, fans are yearning for more.
Ed Boon offers a possible Injustice 3 update
In an exclusive interview with The Direct at San Diego Comic-Con, Mortal Kombat and Injustice creator Ed Boon shared an update on where he thinks the future lies Injustice 3 release the rack.
The well-known fighting game developer said that he and the team at NetherRealm Studios “love Injustice“ and “(he) would be surprised if (the studio) never did one again:”
“Well, we love the ‘Injustice’ games. You know, I’d be surprised if we never did one again. We don’t have anything to say right now because we’re in ‘Mortal Kombat’ mode right now.”
Boon revealed whether the studio had actively considered what a potential third game in the super-powerful fighting game series would look like. “We’re always kicking ideas around” what could be “great for the next game:”
“Oh yeah! We’re always kind of throwing ideas around and thinking about what we could do and what would be cool in the next games.”
As Boon said in his comments, Injustice 3 is still unannounced and has not been officially confirmed in any capacity.
However, it’s exciting to know how optimistic the video game legend is about the future of the franchise.
Will there be an Injustice 3?
According to the comments of trusted game insider Jeff Grubb before the announcement Mortal Kombat 1 (referred to as Mortal Kombat 12 fans before release), NetherRealm’s next project was the aforementioned Mortal Kombat game and no Injustice 3:
“‘Mortal Kombat 12’ would make the most sense because it’s a game they know will make money and sell well. That’s what I’ve heard happening…it’s in line with reality and what I’ve heard.”
Now that Mortal Kombat 1 the post-launch content plan is complete, which means the studio may slowly begin developing whatever comes next. And there’s a pretty good argument that it could be Injustice 3.
Posted by Boon himself X (formerly Twitter) in September 2022, which the studios had “more than one pot on the stove” implying that whatever came after the game they were developing at the time (Mortal Kombat 1) could have been worked on at the same time:
“Good, but we have more than one pot on the stove.”
This is all after the third supposed leak Injustice game list in 2021; however, the authenticity of this list has never been confirmed.
Although it is not known if this is the second one “pot” The Boon referred to is actually Injustice 3there seems to be a pretty good chance that it might be.
Since its founding in 2010, NetherRealm has developed console titles exclusively for two franchises, Mortal Kombat and Injustice.
So unless the team is preparing to reveal an entirely new IP to the world with their next title, it would make sense that that second game is Injustice.
Mortal Kombat 1 is now available for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, PC and Nintendo Switch.
