MATILDA is one of the most nostalgic films of the 90s, and for some brings back fond memories of being a kid.
The starring role was played by child actor Mara Wilson, but fans of the film may wonder what she is up to now.
What does Mara Wilson from Matilda look like now?
The 1996 movie – based on the novel by Roald Dahl – told the story of Matilda Wormwood, a little girl underappreciated by her cruel parents and tortured by evil headmistress Miss Trunchbull.
Using her psychic powers she gets her own back on them in many ways and is eventually adopted by caring teacher Miss Honey.
Born on July 24, 1987, actress Mara Wilson played Matilda when she was just nine-years-old.
Sadly, after filming the movie, she suffered the tragic loss of her mother and only took on a couple more roles before bowing out.
Opening up to ITV’s Lorraine about losing her mum, Mara revealed: “Danny DeVito took the film Matilda and showed it to my dying mother while she was in hospital so she could get the chance to see it.
“She loved the book and I found that very heartening. I didn’t know that for a while.”
She continued: “Sometimes I feel I should have stopped acting after Matilda and gone out on a high – plus I didn’t have my mother around…”
What else did Mara Wilson star in?
Before Matilda, Mara had previously made a name for herself when she played the role of Robin Williams’ daughter in the 1993 movie Mrs Doubtfire.
As a child star, she also appeared on Miracle on 34th Street in 1994.
Mara’s other roles included playing Annabel Greening in A Simple Wish (1997), and Lily Stone in Thomas and the Magic Railroad (2000).
But she quit acting in 2000, and in her 2016 autobiography revealed the main reason why she wanted out.
She said: “The rejection hurt because it had been just such a prominent part of my life for so long. It had been the thing that defined me.
“Writing I’d always loved. There’s a saying – ‘If you can live without it, you should’. And I found that I could.”
In her interview with ITV’s Lorraine, Mara also revealed acting was only ever meant to be a “hobby”.
She told the Scottish host: “I never meant to become famous. I grew up in Los Angeles and child was acting, it was almost like a hobby.”
Where is Marra Wilson now?
Since quitting Hollywood, Mara has turned her attention to writing.o.
The former child star previously said: “Writing was always my secret desire. It was always something that in the back of my head I wanted to do.
“I wrote a lot of stories on the sets of movies. On Matilda, I wrote several.”
Mara has written for titles including Elle, The New York Times and Vanity Fair and released her memoir – Where Am I Now? – in 2016.
After she shunned the limelight, she also worked as a playwright.
As of 2023, Mara has an estimated net worth of £394K ($500K).
